Insurance Question

I've been getting various insurance quotes for the Puma I'm about to purchase, but the number plate is not being recognised!

I've now found out that the car was a "personal" import. I'm really not sure what this means but the dealer says it was imported by Ford when new. Has anyone else experienced this? Will it affect my insurance?

Thanks.

Thermostat Housing - 1.4

Hi,

Any help would be appreciated.

I need to replace the thermostat housing and seal on my 1.4 but for the life of me I cannot find a replacement part. I guess the one to fit a 1.7 won't fit mine?

Local Ford dealer doesn't have a clue either! They said it might be a Focus part that I need?

Any help or pointers please.................doing my head in!!!

How To: Change Waterpump Without Removing The Cambelt

Wiki??

How to to replace waterpump without removing the cambelt. Hopefully will dispel some of the myths that you need to take the cambelt off to replace.

What you need:

Various sockets, namely 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 15mm, E8 star socket
Waterpump: Ford Part 1566239 circa £100
Jack
Block of wood
Axle stands
3l undiluted Anti freeze
Screwdrivers
12mm and 13mm spanner
Torque Wrench

Guide:

Start by jacking the car up and placing on axle stands.

Drain the coolant by undoing the plastic bolt in the bottom right hand corner of it

Remove the weathershield

If you look under and up you will see thisis held in my 2 8mm bolts, remove them

once free look behind the plastic and undo the hose from the clips

Withdraw the shield from the car

Next job is to loosen the 4x 12mm nuts on the waterpump pulley, makes it easier to do while the belt is still on, the pulley may still try and spin though like it did with me, however i wedged it with a screwdriver placed across the bolt heads.

When those are loosened its time to remove the drive belt

Take your 13mm spanner and place on the tensioner bolt, act as though you are turning the bolt in an anti clockwise direction and the tensioner should move freeing up tension on the belt

I find it easiest to pull the belt off the waterpump pulley

once the belt is free undo the bolts on the waterpump pully fully, and remove the pulley

Remove the alternator which is held in my 2 15mm bolts and a 13mm you need to remove the bolts pointed in the diagram below, and the 10mm holding the power terminal on

15mm bolt hiding round the back here

You can then withdraw the alternator

Remove the 10mm bolt holding the idler pulley on

Remove the pulley

Next up we need to remove the cambelt cover, there are 9 i think, 10mm bolts holding that on

Its easier to show you there whereabouts on the removed cover

Remove from car

Now we need to drop the engine on that side to get better access, i thin kyou could probably do it without diong this but it makes it 10 times easier and also means you dont have to have an exact length extension bar for access

support engine with block of wood and jack

Undo 3 15mm bolts here on the mount

Then the 3 threaded bars, that are undone using the E8 star socket

GENTLY lower the engine to give you better access to the waterpump, viewed from underneath the car

There are 6 10mm bolts holding it on, the first threee are easiest undone from above, the rest from underneath, again better to show you where they are on the removed pump, this is pictured in the same orientation it is when attached to the car

try and avoid damaging the cambelt undoing some of them on the extreme left, also bear in mind when you undo them all water will drip from it

When all are out you can remove from the car, be aware excess water/coolant that doesnt get drained will fall out from it

withdraw from car

clean up mating face etc

Then fit your new pump and gasket on in reverse order to removal.

Bear in mind the following

Torque the nuts on the new waterpump to 9nm
Torque the nuts on the waterpump pulley to 25nm

When refitting the belt fit around the pulleys depending on your configuration below

If im doing it on my own i find easiest to wrap around all the pulleys and leave the power steering pump until last, then slacken the tensioner and push over the pulley.

Make sure the belt is seated correct on all pulleys, there are groove for the ribs in the belt to sit in. Worthwhile giving the engine a turn over with a 19mm socket on the crank pulley to check its all seated ok.

If all looks good refit the weather shield.

Retighten the radiator drain plug, and fill back up with coolant 50/50 mix, 3l of coolant 3l of water.

Let car warm fully with cap off expansion tank squeezing coolant pipes, letting any bubbles come out, recheck level and correct as necessary. Check water levels for the next few days of running.

Disclaimer: If you have aircon there may be an extra step early on to remove an extra pulley, i think the powersteering pulley also needs to be removed also on aircon models only

Glad To Be Back Behind The Wheel Of A Puma!

Hi All,

thanks for the forum, very informative and entertaining! I have just bought the below puma 1.7 16 v on an R plate. It cost £500 although it needs a new clutch and a new cv boot. There is a very small amount of rust starting to appear on the rear arches, other than that, completely rust free! A previous owner has installed the milli seats/door cards and I have to say they really improve the overall look and comfort of the interior.

This is my second puma, the first I only had for around 4 months before I moved abroad for work, so now that I am back home I wanted to pick up where I left off with these great little cars.

Cheers!

I'm not sure how to add photos!

It's a silver 2001 1.7 with only 35K on the clock. It's getting its MOT this week and, all being well, I'm collecting it next weekend. Checked it over pretty thoroughly and it seems very clean - practically no rust. There's been some repair work done above the right rear wheel arch but it's barely noticeable and very well done.

Will post pics when I get it.

Engine Noise - Is It Normal?

Hi. I'm new to Fords, always having had Mazdas in the past with absolutely no problems over 30 years! (Yes, I know what you are thinking ...!). However, my old 626 was physically too large to fit in my back yard parking space and so against my better judgement, i didn't replace it with another Mazda, but a Ford Puma 1.7 2002. i love the car - it drives beautifully, handles well and holds the road like glue. However, being new to Fords can't get used to the engine noise which is louder than the Mazda and makes a noise which can only be described as a london underground train leaving a station - a sort of powerful whining. Is this normal? It almost feels to me like the car is telling me to drive faster as it sounds so much better when it is driving faster. Also having looked at various forums re the Puma I am now starting to wonder whether my car will have the dreaded Nikosil linings; should I be worried?
There is also a 'ticking' noise and a slight smell when i turn on the aircon for the first time; any problems brewing here? The dealer would only give me a warranty for 3 months and i wonder why - he told me a 'lot of work' had been done on the car previously. Hope someone can help. Thank you. PS - don't be too technical with your answers - don't do technospeak

Juddering / Stuttering Acceleration After Fuel Pump Replacement

I recently had the fuel pump in my Ford Puma replaced by a mobile mechanic, as the car had become a non-starter.

After the pump was replaced, the car started up right away and seemed fine at first, but soon afterwards I noticed the performance when accelerating was not smooth at all, and felt stuttery / lumpy. It didn't improve after refilling the tank, and the problem became all the more noticeable when pulling away from traffic lights or on the motorway.

Oddly enough, inbetween stuttering the car actually feels like it can accelerate faster than it used to with the original pump (the replacement is a Walbro model I got here: http://www.fuelpumpsonline.co.uk/ford-puma-17-16v-fuel-pump-802-p.asp ), so perhaps it could be an intermittent electrical fault?

If anyone's got any suggestions or advice I'd be really grateful!

Central Locking Strange Problem

First of all, hi' everyone newbie here.

Apologies if the topic has appeared before, but searched and couldn't find anything similar.
My Puma is 01 so has 3 button fob which has been working perfectly for over a year.
Today when I parked it up and switched of engine, the doors locked of their own accord. When I opened door to get out, the alarm sounded and I had to switch it off with key as fob wouldn't work.
Now when I unlock with key, the doors immediately lock themselves again. When I am in car and switch off engine, the doors lock themselves and when I start the car, the alarm goes off.
Can anyone help or possibly linked to a thread I've missed?
Thanks, Stewy

Poorly Puma

Oh, how I love my Puma. We've been together for a year and a half now, there's nothing I wouldn't do for him. (Yes, it's a HIM, take the abuse elsewhere :-P)

But he doesn't half cost me money!! Like most 1.7's he has that charming little habit of drinking more oil than is strictly necessary when driven, shall we say, enthusiastically, but I've more or less made my peace with that.

Today though I've abandoned him unceremoniously at the local garage and told them to just call me with a total. I knew I had to take him in this week anyway for some six month old MOT advisories that'd slipped my mind - a couple of tyres close to the legal limit, a slightly corroded brake pipe and a shock absorber with 'a light misting of oil', whatever the hell that means. On top of that it would appear my HCV has gone. Not currently a problem but if Summer ever deigns to appear life could get pretty uncomfortable. But then today I drove the two miles to my mum's house only to hear the radiator fan thing going for all it's worth. I hop out, pop the bonnet and there you have it - a coolant reservoir well below the minimum with the contents not the pretty iridescent orangey-pink it should be, but a rather dismal shade of black. Ah. Oops... Really should have been keeping an eye on the coolant too. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm under there all the time anyway checking on the oil situation, a cursory glance wouldn't have gone amiss.

I'm sorry Peefa (as in P-for-Puma, pforpuma, peefapuma, geddit?!), I really am sorry. So now I'm just hoping that the ugly black is a result of letting the coolant get too low for too long, and nothing to do instead with the head gasket. That I would really not like. It would be pretty convenient too if the HCV hadn't in fact gone and it was a coolant related malfunction instead, but I think I'm just clutching at straws.

So here I am, on PumaPeople, having a little rant to help me feel better and deal with the guilt of neglecting the car I love so much.

Whoops!!!

Just wanted peoples opinions (NICE PLEASE) on whether they thought

a. was a good idea to do this.

b. does anyone have any experience of using a Puma as their family run about, baby seat an all...?

Whilst crusing round the M25 this morning I looked up and my Speedo was reading 0...now I know thats not that uncommon but I was actually moving for once...Reading up i've concluded its most likely a VSS as its also cutting out slowing down towards roundabouts !.

Are they easy enough to swap out?

Any idea how much fords would charge for the job or price alone?

Is it a usual stock item for them or can they be got elsewhere?

General Help Needed With New Puma!

Hi everyone. I have joined the ranks of Puma owners with an '02 reg 1.7 Thunder in Moondust silver with 43,000 miles and very little rust. A punt on eBay, but I'm really, really pleased with it so far!

I'm making an effort to keep this car in top condition. I've already had the small bit of rust on one wheel arch drilled out and sorted, both arches and the underside waxoyled, and most of the general knocks and scratches dealt with. It looks great!

My question is this: I'm not a mechanic, not by a long stretch, but now I'd like to get the car driving as efficiently, smoothly and quickly as possible. What should I check / change? Plugs, leads? Should I use some fuel treatment like redex? Should I upgrade the bushes (not that I'm sure what I bush actually is!)? Should I do the Airbox mod?? Does anyone have any tips for how they keep their Pumas running beautifully, and that VTEC engine at it's best??

Any input would be appreciated. PS - I've probably posted this in the wrong forum. Soz.

Not new to the ford scene by any stretch but just purchased my first ever Puma its a millennium which i have rescued from scrap heaven (was a cat D but needs some tlc) i have already started on the work having done the cam belt water pump full service and Mot which it flew through with no advisories.... bonus!!! stands me still at under 1k with only 81k and two previous owners.... Now for the questions and there will be lots over the coming months ? It seems to suffer from slipping clutch but only rarely (hydraulic slave cylinder fault maybe ) and the drivers bolster is shot ( anyone do a replacement ) and i need some screw blanking plugs for the door cards and a near side mirror so any pointers or advice would be very much appreciated......
Help Desperately Needed With My Cambelt In Surrey

Some of you may have seen my recent "Newbie cambelt problems" post. My normal local garage has tried to replace the cambelt on my W reg 93,000 1.7. But they cannot get it started again, they have taken the head off & say the problem is poor compression on the valves. I am not sure if they have fixed them to save face they poured water down in the head & showed me water leaking past the valves. So its either a dead Puma or is there someone near Guildford or Surrey who might be able to rebuild it?
Really gutted it was a cheap buy but with no history, it was driving ok before I thought it would be good idea to get the belt changed as a precaution!

Any ideas folks?
But with no service history thought cambelt should be changed, took it into my ljocal garage which has always fixed various cars I have had. Two days of work & they replaced cambelt but it won't start. Seems the timing is wrong and poor compression, any suggestions of common mistakes. Or anyone near Guildford can advise please?
New And Needing Help!

Hello there, I'm nikkii from Bournemouth and just stumbled on your site after reading other puma forums-I've heard good things and would appreciate any advice. I've had my puma for a year now, unfortunately had a few problems but thought she was over the worst! The head gasket went and we got this fixed by a mechanic friend who Aso changed the cambelt at the same time. Things were good for a few weeks but I arrived home last week and when I got out, steam was pouring out of the engine and the coolant just emptied out all over the road. I know nothing was am learning and.eager to learn as I love driving this car when she drives! My dad came down to look at it for me ans we ruled out a couple of things. Not The head gasket as no water in the oil and coolant is ok, plus heaters run hot and cold. It's not the thermostat as pipes to the radiator are hot. The temp gauge on the dash didn't go into the red which is why I didn't notice it was getting hot. We think it could be the temp sensor? Does this sound like a possibility, I hope so as that's not expensive to fix and my boyfriend and I have spent so much money on the car to date and there's talk of cutting our losses as we just can't afford to keep spending so much but I love her! Any other ideas welcome. Just after I got her back after the head gasket someone reversed into me whilst I was waiting at traffic lights so I was without the car again! I just want to drive her as she drives so well, but I'm not getting much in.
Look forward to hearing from you and glad I found the site!

My Track/race Puma For Sale

I'm sadly having to sell my track car, as anyone on here and other forums knows the amount of money and time I've ploughed into this car is a bloody lot, it really is a great car and would be perfect to enter into a race series or just use for track days etc.
I'm open to offers especially from people from this club etc but please note I will not be stripping this car. I will give it a few weeks then I might think about it.

Thanks Alan.

So my drivers door is misaligned. It's just about spot on at the lock, but at the bottom it tilts in marginally, and at the top, it leans out marginally.

Is there any give in the hinges or secondary adjustment (my old man swears some cars have that - adjustment beyond just rehanging it) or am I going to have to bite the bullet, bribe a mate with some beer and try - undoubtedly - some twelve times to get it aligned properly, and tighten it back up?

1.deep plish and wax detail to include touch up any stone chips ect
2. get and fit a stereo idealy a standard silver tape player in silver with a code (anyone sellling one giving one away?) lol
3. repaint alloy centers either silver to match alloys or repaint all 4 alloys and caps in white/cream (ideas/opinions welcome)
4. maybe swap the seats for some more comfy ones as i love the seats but the wife aint keen maybe ones from another ford if they fit????
5. have got a new induction kit filter thingy from old puma to fit love the sound and with my home made ducting theres no heat soak ect

Hi Another Newbie

Hi there
I'm Natalie and I've had Koshka (my Puma) since October 2010, I got her to replace my 106 GTI which was costing more to keep going than the little pugger was worth I didn't really know much about them in all honesty but I'm pretty fussy with cars so it was never going to be easy finding me a new one. I think I was just looking on autotrader when I spotted this one with FSH and low miles when I had a lightbulb moment, after reading the little review in the back of EVO mag I decided this was the car for me
The only problem was, my Mum decided she really liked them too, and bought herself one.

I have to admit recently I was thinking of getting something else, but after getting the rear arches sorted I'm in love again.

Airbag Light On After Interior Swap

Hello there, I think this is probably my first post even though I joined up ages ago... will have to do a proper intro at some point.

I recently bought a Millie interior for my Puma. My better half fitted it for me but ever since the airbag light has been on I did read on another forum that someone had the same problem (although I think it was on a Fezza) and he solved it by swapping over the pre-tensioners from his old seats. Would that work? I can't see how as surely the connection is the same?
Is there any other way around it? I've seen those Recaro things on ebay but would rather not pay out extra money if I have to.

Thanks

Rear Wiper Dodgy!

Hi,
Firstly, I'd say this would be an MOT fail so I'm godsmacked it passed only a few weeks ago!
Basically, when I pull the wiper stalk (or push, I forget when I'm not in the car!) to activate the rear wiper, nothing happens. Nothing at all infact. The wiper spray/washer works fine, but the wiper stays put. Then, after 10 seconds, sometimes more, sometimes less, I get some movement, but it often will be just one wipe at the most, often stopping mid-wipe. It's very frustrating, and if it's an MOT fail I really can't just leave it...

Any ideas? Where do I start?

Thanks in advance, Alan

Puma Faults

Hey guys, new to the site and just bought a cheap 1999 Puma 1.7. The body work is pretty poor condition but ive got it for me as a general run about and for the misses to learn in so she is likely to prang it
There are a few faults tho which i am unsure of, any help would be appreciated.

Locking - the car can be locked from both doors but only unlocked from the passenger side, the remote central locking battery has died so will need to replace that asap but im guessing that wont fix the problem as im sure if it did the previous owner would have done this, is this a known fault?

Door open dash light - the light on the dash is always illuminated saying a door is open when everything is securely shut?

Leaning - when the car is driven in a straight line the car slightly vears off to the right, i assume this is probably just a wheel allignment problem and should be a easy fix?

Cloudy Lenses - Front headlights are very cloudy so need to clean them up and will probably fit some better lights in, anyone recommend a brand of HIDs off ebay? Im from Guernsey and dont have MOT so should be fine.

Clock - lines missing on the numbers for the clock, is this a easy swap, off a replacement puma clock off ebay?

Many thanks for your help.

Should I Worry

Just been out for my first hoon of 2012 and a couple of time I heard a noise that was a little worrying. After giving it beans and then braking/engine braking for a corner I'd hear a knocking noise as the revs decreased, but it went when I put my foot back down. It didn't do it every time (maybe only 3 or 4 in the whole hour) and I couldn't get it to replicate it again on the way home. I seem, to remember it's done it before last summer on hard drive too.

New Guy !

Hello All !

my names jack .. 24 and live in plymouth and ive recently brought my first car which happens to be a puma !
after riding motorbikes daily for the past 6 years ( occasionaly using the mrs car ) i decided to have a break .. i sold the bike .. payed off a few things and thought id buy a cheap car to run around in ...
i got told of a puma for sale localy ... 98 model .. 137k .. tax and mot'd .. £650 and thought well its high millage but for that money ill just run it into the ground.
viewd the car in the pitch black ( bad ideal ) decided to buy it as i really needed transport and and went back for the car later in the night,
next day i gave it a proper look over and its abit of a shed ... i think its had some welding done on the bottom of the car ... joins in doors / bumpers etc are out of line so i think it might have had a smack ?
it came with one key so no remote locking and a few other bits like one of the rear lights is full of mold and the heated rear window and wiper dont work.
so as i can imagine i wernt to happy BUT .. it was my own fault for being lazy.

on the plus side the car seems to drive fine .. and the more i drove it the more i liked it .. so what was " im gonna run this thing till it breaks " turned into " hmm maybe i should do this up " and found myself looking for things to buy.

Door Card Removal/secure Re-Fit

Hi everyone. After over 10 years, I'm back in a Puma! I paid way over the odds for what I though was a really nice example, 52K miles on X plate, but it's already starting to make me fell sick with regret... I am hoping my instinct is fine, and the engine/gearbox are all spot on, but I'm finding very annoying bits and bobs the more I look at and drive the car.

The 1st thing that should of been obvious, the passenger door card is hanging off completely, held on purely at the top where it meets the window, and it doesn't hang off it like I thought it should? It's also missing all the poppers down one side so it flops off when you pull the door shut from inside, something I really didn't do on test drive :-(

Anyway, it's not a major one that, so can anyone help with a detailed guide of how to remove them first, then I can look at fixing them?

Many Thanks, Alan

Right about now you're probably thinking 'Who?', and you'd be right to.

I joined here when I bought my first Puma, which was back in around 2005/2006-ish, and haven't posted on here since I sold my old Puma in about 2008.

Anyway, I've just been and bought myself another silver 1.7 today, and have mostly been grinning like an idiot ever since.

Sure, the Puma is never going to set the world alight in terms of outright performance.....but it's just SO much fun to drive.

I'm such a happy-chappy that I thought I'd dust off my old account here and share the love with people who understand the joy of Puma.

Now, if you'll excuse me, there's some B-roads that need assaulting......

Which Puma To Buy?

Morning all, new to site as i'm in the market to buy my first Puma. Had a read through various posts and the "Wiki" section regarding what to look for etc but none seem to state much about the early late version differences? I plan to buy to use as a daily driver with the intention of a few track days so was wondering is there any differnces when it comes to tuning the Puma? Will be tweaking a few things and wondered if one was better than the other when i comes to tuning?
I'm looking forward to my purchase when i find one and it looks like this site will be pretty handy in the future. Thanks in advance,
Phil .

Rear Spacer Dimensions...

i have recently swapped out my rear beam, i had an old fork mount beam, that is narrower than the later ones and comes with 10mm spacers... unfortunately these have pretty much disappeared!

could someone measure the "height" of the hole in the middle and the overall height (top to bottom) for me please, i am pretty sure i have got the rest of the dimension worked out and hopefully my mate can get some knocked up through work!

Hi folks, just bought my third Puma after owning two when they first came out (1997 and 1999). I seem to remember paying over £15K for the first two
and now I have just picked one up for £200!!!
I have replaced the sticking heater control valve (20 minutes and scraped knuckles) and one tyre. Everything else works so down to the testing station

Locks Deadlocked!

Hi all,
Hopefully someone can help.
My partners puma has got a flat battery so tried to manually open the doors instead of using the remote to be able to pop the bonnet to charge the battery.
However the key won't open either door or the boot. So I'm guessing the battery has gone completely flat and deadlocked the car.

Does anyone know of a way to open the door (short of smashing a window) to be able to open the bonnet?

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new, bought my Puma just before Christmas. Everything seems fine but I have a problem with my gear stick. Gear changes are nice and slick as expected but there seems to be a bit of play when in gear and so at certain speeds the gear stick buzzes/ rattles/vibrates??? If I rest my thumb on top of the stick the vibrations stop but starts again as soon as I let go. Does anyone have any ideas as to fix this as it's really starting to annoy me now!!!Please help!! THANKS!!!!

Looking For My First Puma

Hello. I have spent some time reading this forum since I started looking for a Puma. All the infomation seems very helpful and i now know a lot more than i did. I currently run a MK1 MX5 that I will be selling as I really need somethign the kids can travel in too and that is a bit more drivable on the motorway. the PUMA seems to tick all these boxes. After reading all the guides and the WIKI here there is just one thing worrying me when I buy, this is the Nikasil bore lining issue. I had a BMW 323i that i got caught with this same issue many yaers back and it lost me a lot of money. I am worried this would happen to me again. can anyone confirm how common this issue was? and was it caused by the fuel (like BMW it was sulphar in fuel in the 90's) or is it caused by Oil?

Thanks in advance for what I am sure will be helpfull answers

Overheating

My 1.7, with only 68k miles, did a strange thing yesterday. On motorway 2 miles from home. Temp gauge climbs slowly into red. My usual check at this stage, with no warning lights, is to check the heater, and sure enough, on hot it blows clod. Now i'm worried. get home, turn off. no strange noises, but contrary to the heater test, the top hose is cooler thanbottom, suggesting to me it is cooling. Depressurized the header tank (Very slowly and gingerly. Lots of prssure vented. With cap now off water level normal. Let it cool down, gingerly went for drive. Been totally normal since, everything working normally..

Being rover trained, i'm very mindful of overheating, but at a loss to explain this. Any suggestions, common faults, etc most appreciated.

New To The Forum, Question About The Puma

hello all. so im thinking about getting a puma as a trackday toy.

i have a fiesta mk3 - 95 that i was doing up as a project, which has been sitting for years and the rot is too far gone to salvage.

i spent quite a bit of money fitting all new suspension (springs and shocks), upgraged brakes (disc calipers and pads), i even bought a 3 inch front to back straight through exhaust when i considered an rs turbo conversion and an upper front strut brace.

could anyone tell me are any of these parts are cross compatible onto the puma?

too add the discs and calipers are non abs from an xr2i
