ok, so it is my birthday today (as exposed on another thread)

I logged on to my internet banking site earlier and saw that my credit card account had been hit for over £400 that I did not recognise.

I phoned my bank and found out that someone has changed my address, home phone number and mobile number at the bank (3 days ago), and promptly made the £400+ spend. What I did not see online, because the transactions are too recent to have been listed, was that a series of other big spends on my account have been made, eating up a whopping £7000 of my credit. It seems that for one transaction the bank tried to phone me to check that the spend was mine, but there was no reply - not a surprise if they changed my contact numbers!

Guess whose credit cards on that account have been frozen...

What gets me is that the fraudsters managed to answer all the security questions correctly to change my contact details.

I now know how other pp members have felt when their cards/accounts have been cloned. I just hope no-one comes knocking on my door for the £7k...

Happy birthday, Ben sad.gif

I take it you will get all the money back? I would chase your bank for compensation too. That is very poor that someone else managed to change your conatct details. When i moved house ING actually sent my proof of new address to my old house in case I still li9ved there and the me that was changing it was a baddy! It annoyed me greatly at the time but far better a bit of annoyance than your sit.

My 30th was the day of the Michelin cop out Indy Grand Prix. That fairly spoiled my day too!

Boo for cra[ birthday surprises. On the plus side Ben, not only are teachers all very rich but I got my new car today! biggrin.gif

S****ing hell! This annoys the crap out of me. Why do some people completely fail to respect their fellow human beings?

It's not enough that you get the money back, they need to pay compensation for their failure.
Last time that happened to us, we received a form to fill in and confirm they were not our transactions, with questions that make you feel you've done something wrong, even though you haven't!
The main thing to watch is that they do not charge you interest while they sort it out, as they tried to do to us on two occasions.

I now bank with Halifax on line and changed details yesterday. Within 20 minutes I received the following email:
Dear customer,

Thank you for confirming your telephone contact details.

If you have made any amendments to your contact details these have now been updated.

Please note that if you hold any joint accounts, only your details will be updated.

This confirmation email has been sent as a security precaution.

If you did not make this number change/confirmation, please call our online helpdesk on 08456 02 00 00. Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Regards,

Halifax Online Helpdesk

The Haynes Fiesta Manual (3397) can answer a lot of your questions.

Ben did they change your details at a branch??? surely they would need to produce a card and answer the questions?? I know when ive recited my numbers off my head in the bank theyve always asked for ID (despite my almost "preprogrammed" recital of sort code and account number!!). Also CCTV in branch.

Maybe its someone who knows you???

I hope you use a cross cut home shredder!!!!

You should be covered by the bank especially if it was done in branch!!

I think the details were changed over the phone, Warren - that hopefully means that the conversation was recorded

or is that wishful thinking on my part?

It may well have been recorded but almost certainly not for your benefit knowing how banks work!!!

One has to question where they got your personal information from?? especially secret question stuff. From my experience of phone banking you usually have a 6 digit code and they ask for 2 numbers eg 1st and 5th number.

It should in theory be quite easy to work out a short list of who could know that info. Would be interesting to know exactly what security questions they asked and hence where the potential source of that data is. Then process of elimination i guess.

You do use a shredder dont you???
