I thought i'd better do a full caliper inspection this year as it's been nearly two years now... huh.gif

I was most pleased to find that the usual corrosion problems behind the pail retaining rails was almost non existent... and even better, when i cleaned a couple of the pistons up, they were still as new too... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif there was a tiny amount of pitting on the 38mm piston but cetainly not enough to warrant replacing it, as it will be shoved all the way back in when i fit my new pads...

these were the 4 pistons taken out of one caliper.... http://www.pumapeople.com/forum/index.php?automo...i&img=11119

I think the key to success with the Alcons is... strip them down and service them thoroughly... then leave them alone and let them bed.... just blasting them with brake cleaner alone is a waste of time in my opinion...

Enjoy the piccies... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif go to the gallery technical to view the full resolution...

Just though i'd update this post as iv'e finsihed now.... it took a little while longer than planned as i had to split one of the calipers to get at one of the knackered torx screws.... what a pig to remove... comp.gif comp.gif

pictures are in the Technical Gallery....

I guess i should add these were brand new calipers, when i fitted them... and that i removed 3 out of 4 pad rails and applied some copper grease before fitting to the car....

the 4th one i couldn't remove due to rounding off the torx screw wacko.gif (not by me)... i'm gona try to get this out soon.... will be interesting to note how much corrosion is behind this one..... wacko.gif

Chris, have you ever thought about writing a full guide on a caliper service?

I've never pulled the calipers off - do you need to drain the brake fluid first?? And how do you get rid of air locks etc when putting them back on??

Looks like a much better aproach than covering them in cleaner, but I've never changed the brake fluid so am kind of nervous about that.

why go to the effort of buying the car and then ruining it... stickpoke.gif

the alcons are custom made with the correct offset etc.... they work quite well too... wink.gif

yeah, you do need a brake bleed kit... i use the Clarke one which attaches to the compressor...

i have done a seperate list of parts needed... i think Happy Kat made it 'sticky' too.... so to speak... smile.gif

I've just had my calipers done at GK - I complained about some rubbing noise

They apparently (according to the receipt)...

"removed front pads and calipers remove slides clean off corrosion and rebuilt using silicone grease"

They seem ok though...

Hmm, if it is corrosion - wonder why my sliders haven't bent?

Perhaps there are degrees of corrosion?

I had thought it was harmless oxidation not actual eating corrosion.

Chris from you other post when would I use the sand paper please?
Garnet Paper 100 grit (as recommended by stoptec) for pad re-finishing/surfacing.... (Don't use aluminium oxide paper)

I am having my calipers cleaned by my local mechanic but will do it with him so to speak to see what's up. also getting the piston retraction tool from your parts list smile.gif

Lie the paper flat down and scrub the pads over it vigourously... this should bring the pad surface up to a nice new looking even texture....

and the brakes should feel good after re-bedding..... you can use sandpaper but this stuff is apperntly better for the discs, i seems to have worked well for me in the past...

they probably will have bent a little at the bottom where there is nothing to hold them flat... mine have a bit, a little bit shouldn't matter

How easy are the seals to replace? Do you just give them a thin coating all round with the silicon grease?
