We have a 58k 1.7 that we bought from a garage last November for £1900. I know it was probably overpriced but it had a great service history and only 2 owners. It was serviced every year even if it had only covered 300 miles. It has 3 keys and well it just fitted the short window of opportunity for my partner needing a car for work.

I bought it knowing the rear arch on the passenger side was just showing signs of coming through. No rust but the paint is bubbling.

Now as someone who has an OCD on getting old things like new as possible, I intended to have the arches seen to and Dinitrol rustproof the body so it gives the car a long life.

I took it to a Dinitrol service centre and body shop and they have quoted £650 a side for the arches and then £800 for the rust remover and then treatment. As well as service soon, this is going to amount to £5000 essentially total.

Is that price way too high for the work? And if it isn't, would I therefore be better off spending the £2000 on another ;if I can find one) rust free Puma (do they even exist?!)

There's no chance of not having a Puma now as my other half loves it more than me, so I'd be out first.

I fully knew upon purchasing the car that I'd have to spend a good amount looking after it and protecting it for the future but I want to make sure I'm not chucking £2k at one car when I can get another one that has no arch issue/or indeed has already been sorted professionally for the same money.

I am located in Teesside (seen 3 other Pumas this week locally so must be a den of them. I think I saw an FRP at Teesside Park last week but can't be sure), so if anyone has any recommendations for bodywork then please do let us know.

That does seem a fair bit when it's only showing early signs...

I always think you're better with the one you know to be honest...

2 years ago paid £800 at a little bodyshop for both rear arches replacing, several stone chips and small rust patches around the doors treating, all over polish and a replacement rear bumper. The quote for just the arches was £250 a side from several places.

That looks amazing Chris, and what I'd want. I take your point on sticking with the one you know. I spent a good two hours washing it today and said to my partner I'd go for a drive in it as my end reward seeing as I never get a chance to.

I did mine combination of I started it the cleaning then local mechanic in garage finished and removed exhaust and petrol tank then treated put back together and I've carried on and we've removed subfrane rear beam and cleaned treated. Didn't cost anywhere near your figures. Having a garage did help.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale
