Hi all

I wonder if someone can shed some light on what exhaust/manifold I have on my car. I have an invoice from Pumabuild but it doesn't state a part number, and while it looks like the Janspeed tail pipe, it's a bolt together system so I'm guessing at the Piper/Pumabuild Ford Racing replica system.

However, the lambda sensor is relocated from the top of the manifold in the engine bay to the end near where it meets the CAT underneath. It's been done properly, with a braided loom wire going to a connector to extend the lambda reach, but I just wondered if I'm correct in my guess? The manifold is very well put together, and even has the little flanges and tabs that allow the heatshield to be bolted on really neatly, so it all looks OEM.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Paul,

FRP system has the lambda just before the cat at the bottom of the mani, nothing you have said suggests it is anything but the Piper FRP replica system. I used to have a Piper FRP rear box on mine, lovely piece of work but quite noisy on the motorway.

For reference, this was my Piper rear box;

This is a Milltek FRP manifold, the Piper should be very similar. Note the lambda hole at the bottom.

Milltek has two lambda holes (no idea why), Piper probably only has one. Is it secured with sprung bolts?

Mine is a Piper manifold and system then I think, looking at that. What do you do with the second hole - bolt?

Yeah, think that was when we blocked it with. It was a while ago.

The thing about the sprung bolts is important, the FRP doesn't have a flexi so when the dog bone lower engine/gearbox mount weakens it can allow excess engine movement which puts strain on the front joint if they are just tightly bolted together.

Well I don't know what I thought I saw when I had a look under before, but I've had a closer look - it has the sprung bolts, and the slide joints, and looks like mild steel so I'm thinking Janspeed?

Sprung bolts is good!

If its mild steel then it is probably the original (Janspeed) system.

Your FRP has the Piper phase I system for the stainless bits.
I remember the manifold being replaced and it was a Piper system fitted.

Phase II has a quieter backbox.

Doesn't the Piper have bolt together flanges?

Oh, and this has to be the only car you could buy where other people on a forum will probably know more about it than you LOL!

Piper Phase I (looks same pretty much as Phase II as the noise just got a bit quieter like standard FRP level)

Mine definitely has the sliding joints and the cat looks different to that.

Ok just gone looking at the year I replaced my manifold.
My manifold was changed in 2005.

I am trying to think what year yours was as maybe it was before 2007 so would be before when the Piper system was available that alan got Piper to make up, even though the manifold was changed at Alan's.

you had a new manifold in SS.
I can't remember if your centre section was changed (in which the cat belongs).

This is a picture of a standard OEM FRP centre section cat.

The only invoice I have relating to the exhaust is for a SS manifold at £183 or something like that. There are no invoices for an exhaust system, and I have detailed invoices for everything else which leads me to think it's the standard exhaust, though the Cat doesn't have that strange heat guard round it.

Every bit of the exhaust on #0062 was eventually replaced with stainless steel. Supplied by Uncle Alan.

I am however, suprised/concerned* that you have "detailed invoices" for everything....I certainly didn't supply any when I sold the car.

Perhaps pumabuild supplied copies to a previous owner? I have everything from wheel bearings to cambelts, including exhaust and even Focus RS wheels etc.

I'm picking my new piper exhaust up tomorrow from Pumabuild as my car has failed its MOT on emissions and who ever had the car before me made a right mess and mangled bits of exhaust together to make it fit!
