I'm having thoughts that I might get another spare rim and kit the two rims up as track day tyres.. my thoughts are though, if I keep P7000 on the rear but on the front have some sticky tyres, will this unsettle the handling do you think?

Only I am going through my road tyres quite quickly and it would be easier to have a set just for track use, though the down side is transporting them and then leaving my two good rims on the side, but then I could just drive to the day in my track tyres...

In dry conditions, having a slightly more grippy front end would be ideal IMO. Given the P6000 situation, it would also even out your tyre wear even with track use. Plus of course, you will have a decent set of tyres for wet conditions as well. smile.gif I'd go for this. biggrin.gif

If you want a proper track day tyre then the only one I know of in 215/40/17 is the Avon ZZR road leagal track tyre.
But! and it's a big BUT. They are about £180 +VAT each.
Not so bad if you only want 2 but still lots 'o' money.

You can find them here

I think I'd replace all 4 though.
Might not be so great having such differing levels of grip.

Well if you know how long they will last it could work out cheaper in the long run, I think ja_stupid.gif

sticky tyres will wear out far faster than my P7000. The idea is that when I wear them out I will have road tyres that are still OK till I get round to replacing the track tyre set.
Where as at the mo my road tyres wear out and then I 'have' to replace them to be legal.
decisions wink.gif

For what it's worth, you should use the same tyre all round. The car has been designed to run on four equal tyres and if you put different ones on each end or each axle you are going to alter the handling. To get the best from your tyres you should swap them back to front and this should even up the wear rate. If you want the best performance from your car you should replace all four tyres at the same time. Putting new tyres on the front is going to give more grip as they are softer. It is only when to mould residue has been removed that the tyre starts to deteriate as it is open to the elements and the rubber starts it's process of drying out, and starts to go hard. Also when replacing only two tyres, they should be fitted to the rear!!!(pirelli tech) and not the front. Not much help on your track day situation, but it tells a story. A lot of track day people have a spare set of alloys with track rubber on, stick them in the back and swap them there.

From personal experience, part worn P6000s on the back, new Goodyear F1s on the front, you saw what happenned on a fast corner in an FRP so I would advise against more grip at the front for fast driving excl.gif

On the same note my ATR will need new fronts soon, I plan to get 2x T1-Rs and put these on the back and have the part-worn Bridgestones moved to the front. The Bridgestones will be pretty much mullerred after the next sprint I do and then I'll have T1-Rs all round.

I'm so attuned to FWD handling (push hard, get understeer, naturally back off to regain the line) I'm not ready for armfulls of opposite lock oversteer so I'd much rather preserve 'more grip at the rear' as the balance...personally speaking.

Are you using the car on the road or for sprinting/hillclimbing? ja_bebe.gif

I wouldn't stick more grippy ones on the front only Kate. Change all 4 if your going to do it.

some really interesting replies, thank you.

I always fit my new tryes to the rear smile.gif so the fronts in theory are always slightly worn, though having said that most times the rears still have bobbles on them when they get to the front.. and in this case they have lasted 5 months blink.gif

Don't think I can fit 4 rims in the boot for an entire track day swap...

I don't need powerflex bushes my car is firm enough now and I don't suffer from uneven tyre wear... just track use wink.gif When my bushes do need changing I will most likely stick with the Ford ones smile.gif

Seeing as I am familiar with how she handles on the P7000 I think that for now I shall stick with them, and just accept that I will probably be buying two tyres more than once a year smile.gif

my fear of changing tyre was if they were not up to the job, as seen in David's pics from Brands, road driving to track driving is different enough to make me concerned over what I use smile.gif

The replies have been very helpful thank you as I had over looked the potential side affect of too grippy at the front smile.gif

I have had four rims with tyres on several occasions. You definitely need seat down and harnesses unclipped!! Depends how much other junk you have in boot!!

I remember a long ago post by Kate regarding carriage of un bolted down rims in the back of a Puma...

IIRC she wasn't overly impressed with the inertia stored in the wheel should she come to a dramatic stop, as the idea of all that weight continuing forward into the back of her seat wouldn't be overly healthy...
