That is my main worry as I had heard that with the original length shocks the spring could pop out when the car was jacked up and that could be seen as a failure.

as lowering springs tend to wear out std dampers quicker
look at the fiesta in my sig, one of my old cars, that was lowered a quoted 40mm (but it was more like 50-60mm actually) on a spax vsx kit, cost around 250£, springs and dampers.....
the proper way to do it
oh and it would look and handle a lot better imo (just dont go TOO stiff)

Still undecided on height, currently lowering the back in small stages until I'm happy. Seems to have helped braking stability but I don't want to go too low or else it will start lifting wheels in corners
