Gearbox Oil

Anyone know the process for doing the transmission oil on a puma? (1.7)
Is it the usual process - fill level with the fill hole?
Is a security bit required to remove the drain/fill plugs?
What is the capacity?

There is no drain plug.

level should be 5-10mm below fill plug hole.
Last pic here shows the fill hole (8mm hex key):

2.8 litres of 75-90 gearbox oil.

WTF? There is no drain plug? How do you get it out? (bar taking off the gearbox full of oil and turning it on it's side?

Not sure, but IIRC, you can pull the inner drive shaft. Sealed for life according to Ford, only need to top up!

Oh right, so the drive shafts seal directly into the box - i.e. remove drive shaft - oil drops. That's good enough!

I don't believe anything is 'filled for life'. Presumably there is a magnet in the gearbox to catch 'bits of cog' but I'm not convinced the oil has a life that long. Number of times I've dropped gear oil and it's looked 'metallic' - it clearly degrades!

removing driveshaft only drains so much, to empty it completely you need to remove shaft and tip

you can drain the fluid from the 5th gear selector shaft, its the plug on the right. Make sure that you use good quality oil as your gear will get a burr(spell) eventually they can crack and fall off and gear start to be hard to find.

Can you post how much oil you get out, please?

And be careful, I recollect someone removing that bolt instead of the level plug, moved the gearlever and then had problems with gear selection.

Yeah, haven't even ordered the oil for Ford yet. So might be a few days. I'll let you know.
Doubt I'll get it all out though without dropping the box.

I've been meaning to get my gearbox oil level checked for a while now, what kind of symptoms can you expect from a low level?

Low oil levels will lead to additional wear on the internal moving parts. Sadly unless you hear a little additional noise or the movement stiffens up a bit you won't get any symptoms until it is too late. The answer is to check the level at the specified intervals. It is easy enough to remove the level plug with the bonnet up and I use an allen key to see how high the oil level is.

To be totally honest, because there is no drain plug (world's most retarded design - well done Ford, world class engineering!), might just wait until the clutch goes (it's fairly high already - strange for 40k) and do it while the box is off.
