Gearbox Oil Change

took my green machine to the local garage for a few bits to be done wishbones and asked them to change the gearbox oil - I was told they tried to drain it but whilst it had a top up plug it doesn't have a drain. I'm sure the old blue one had it drained -do they have a drain plug and if they don't how do you change it as with 95k I think it could do with it

You can't suck it out as the gear cluster runs too close to the casing near the top up hole.
To get more out, you could either remove a driveshaft or, what we do on the race car, unscrew the lowest detent plunger BUT I'd advise not to select any gears until its put back in!
That reminds me, I need to order up some gearbox oil for next season! Thanks

Drive shaft out on mine to drain it
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

the only way to get a decent amount out is to unscrew that plunger as Turby says... it's located underneath the allen screw at the front of the box where you can drain excess amount from....
another method is to remove the end plate, and just re-seal it back again either with a cork gasket from ford which is available..or Wurth sealant...
pulling the shaft out doesn't drain much really compared to whats in there....plus it's thick, so ideally drain it after a drive when warm to get a bit more out...

I changed my clutch a few days ago for an 2.0 st clutch. When taking box out I unscrewed plunger and it removed about 1800 2000ml of oil which left about 1000ml in the box(capacity is about 2.8ltrs). When the box was out I removed the remainder of the oil by tipping box on sides. This is the only way to completely remove all the oil from the box. The gear change now is so sweet! Smooth as silk. Most overlooked servicing on Puma and should all be done everytime a clutch is changed.

All done - i think they took out the plunger - anyway they got most of the old stuff out - what a revalation - it changes very sweetly now
Thermostat housing (new plastic one) fitted and coolant all changed
Very happy with the green one now - will look at the slightly iffy paintwork when the weather improves now
