hi everyone

thought id start up a project thread seen as ive bought a puma to turn into a semi track day car for now but a full on track toy within the next year.

as normal all my plans of keeping things cheap and not going over the top and doing it all slowly over the next year have all gone out the window and i now have to try and have most of it done by the time we go to the nurburgring in may .

so heres how the story goes so far.

bought the puma for £950, needed tax and two new front tyres. bodywork isnt too bad a few scratches here and there and the rears are starting to rust like most pumas of this age, the front wings at the bottom need rubbing down and spraying and the underseals need spraying too, all stuff im going to try and correct myself at some point.

all the bushes are shot and i dont know how it passed an mot two months ago and also the front right strut is dead but they are things ill be changing anyway so no worries there.

the car is on 105,000 so not too bad but has no service history except for one bit of paper that shows a cambelt change and a clutch change at 87,000 miles all though this was pretty useless as no tensioner or stretch bolt was changed so it could still go at any time, something i will be getting done before may.

but the engine seems to pull really well and hopefully after a few choice mods ill have it running with a bit more power, only a little bit but any is better than nothing, im going to get a compression test done to make sure the engine is ok before i start doing anything as if its not ill have to save up for a second hand engine and have a go at fitting it myself one weekend.

here's how it was when i bought it.

so my plans for it basically are.

1) fit modified frp airbox.

2) fit all round new bushes for powerflex.

3) fit 4-2-1 manifold, sports cat and powerflow rear box.

4) fit 300mm st170 discs and mk3 mondeo calipers.

5) fit HEL braided stainless hoses all round.

6) fit ap racing coilovers and new top mounts.

7) fit my spare frp front splitter.

8) get cambelt changed.

9) get new cams fitted, piper or frp equivalent.

10) get frp map installed onto car or dreamscience etc.

11) fit front bucket seats.

12) fit new brake shoes and wheel cylinders, may do the focus rear upgrade one day but probably not.

13) fit my safety devices harnesses.

14) fit frp rear engine torque link.

15) fit lower and upper strut braces and maybe the rear one.

16) spray and fit mondeo si wheels.

17) paint calipers.

18) fit new drop links.

19) fit new ball end joints.

20) ring insurance company and get stung about an extra £300 to put it all on :(

so as you can see a bloody long list and an expensive one and im sure there is lots more in the future. but i work hard and want to play hard too :)

hopefully have most of it done this year and the ring will be its first outing so hoping to have alot of it done by then but doubt ill have the engine upgrades done by then.

ill keep it updated and let you all know how its getting on :D

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this project pans out. You've made a cracking start Al and I'm confident we'll make short work of the coilover install ;)

Hell, I managed to do my own ones on my own!

Wheels came out looking really good too bro. Might have to dig out my old T-Sport wheels and refurb them now.
i may not own a puma but it dont mean i dont love 'em!

Are those the same coilovers as Chris fitted to his Thunder Al?
Just trying to remember what Chris first fitted that turned out to be utter duff.

You have a lot planned, though I am sure you will not rush it so as to mess up the finished result :)

hopefully it all goes to plan.

would love to strip it out and roll cage it one day but not for a while as i still need an evening car for taking people out etc so its gonna be a bit awkward as it is with bucket seats and harnesses lol. might only put one in for me.

cant really ask a lady to get in and put her harness on ha ha.

Why not just use Trannie for taking lady friends out Alan?

Then the 1.7 can become a full blown track / road car.
Stripped out for light weight and general use.

As you rent Al do you have cleaner stuff on hand to ensure you leave the car park OK and not covered in oil/grease?
