Hello!

Recently got back behind the wheel of a puma, a standard 1999 1.7.

However the MPG seems to be a bit too low even for me. Just calculated it is doing 18.9mpg.

It is due into the garage later this week for new bushes all round, so will ask them to look into the problem. What would you guys suggest? Lambda? Plugs? Filter?

Is there a common reason for poor mpg in a puma?

Thank you in advance.

Olly

Lambda sensor would be the main offender, chuck some new plugs and leads in for good measure and that should do the trick.

There something in the wiki about it I think

Thanks

Change the air filter too whilst you are at it.

Is the car getting up to the correct temperature?

A good service not forgetting tyre pressures, just checked mine and they were between 16 and 23 psi! Ambient temp does play a part!

How do you people with 35+ MPG drive?

Changing up as soon as possible, or riding out the gears? fast slow acceleration? etc

My mileage is terrible on the work run as I have to do a lot of crawling through the traffic, though it improves if I don't pull forward every time the car in front moves 2 inches. MPG increases dramatically if I can do long runs without stopping. Having said that I don't think I have ever got 30 MPG out of mine over a tank but maybe if I could just see the motorway MPG it might be doing more then!

Mixture of motorway and urban b roads. I was getting 33mpg but recently up to 36mpg as I have managed to avoid traffic. Funny thing is now I'm doing 80-85mph op the motorway i'm getting beter MPG than when I was doing 70mph but probably because as I said i have had less sitting in traffic on the b roads. Also probably getting better mpg due to the bad weather so driving at a steadier speed.

I do quite abit of stop start driving (not alot compared to big city drivers) but a small ammount and very very little motorway so maybe thats me reason for getting a slightly low MPG <_<

if driving at a steady speed for an amount of time and if that speed is not too high in revs you will acheive good mpg figures. if you have to accelerate and brake alot plus sit in traffic it will give much lower mpg figires in any car.
