No, they will be fine.... the rails are stainless and so screws in the same material complement the setup well...

the corrosion is a problem behind those rails because water and muck is getting trapped inbetween the two and sitting there.... as there is a dip in the machining of the caliper for some reason behind the rail.....

always a good idea to add a smidge of copper grease to the bottom of the screw before screwing down...

umming and rr'ing whether to order more pistons or not as Assimilate and BigG have had my last couple of sets of pistons...don't really want to order another £1000 quids worth if i'm gona be holding on to them til spring time... wacko.gif

and so if anyone is interested in pistons or Alcon caliper overhaul they need to pm me asap... as it may swing my decision on ordering....

as stated on a previous thread these are outstanding quality and are working rather nicely cool.gif

The optimum compound to use between the pad rails, screw and caliper is Duralac. This is an aerospace anti-corrosion compound designed specifically to prevent disimilar metal corrosion.

I have used this on mine so will report back on the next service how it is doing (and hopefully wont spill it down my trousers next time)
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

I had a feeling thats what you actually meant when you mentioned Gelac. I recall you were using Duralac on my recommendation.

Steel and aluminium joined together - why won't the corrosion be due to the disimilar metals process? Duralac will seal voids and prevent water ingress.

let's not get carried away.. laugh.gif whether your using copper grease, duralac or silicone whatever... the main issue is that they are stripped and cleaned every year (2 at the most!)..... i'll stick to using the copper grease it seems to work perfectly well... tongue.gif

now, anyone needing any pistons? biggrin.gif .... as i'm going to order just a very small amount to see me through 1or2 more services....

i was tempted by this 'dry bleed' system... http://www.apracing.com/car/caliper/drybleed.htm

looks very cool and state of the art bleeding..... they are available in 3/8 unf threading too.... tongue.gif tongue.gif

doubt i'll ever bother tho.. laugh.gif

huh.gif after a second look, it appears it uses an o-ring seal so useless for the Alcons..

New batch of Pistons just in.... very pleased with them again... a real little work of art.. cool.gif

After running these for a while now and been driving the FRP quite a bit lately, i'm sooooo impressed with the braking since fitting these...

I won't go on too much as people will clearly think i'm just 'blowing my own trumpet' .... all i can say is....

Yep!...

my alcon pistons were in very good condition before fitting these.....

Ben Toney was round yesterday having a strip down (so to speak)... he is a trained Engineer at the Land Rover Testing facility.... he may comment..(altho he hasn't had them fitted as his turned out to be almost brand new)...

Ever since I bought my FRP I’ve been ‘underwhelmed’ by the brakes, 1112202173.gif overwhelmed by everything else but the brakes have been a different matter. With increasing vibration and growing ‘underwhelmedness’ I eventually went along to my local Ford to find out what the issue was. They pontificated somewhat then pontificated some more until I got the impression that these ‘Alcons’ needed a specialist touch. I found Chris (eldoodarino) on the site and arranged a trip to Nottingham for a complete brake overall. It soon became apparent that my Alcons weren’t all Alcons, they had been bodged up with some discs that probably came from a Focus and had seen more than one skimming, I think they were something like 22mm thick so the pistons stuck way out and were consequently reduced to some word beginning in f and ending in ed. ranting2.gif
Chris was brilliant stripping down the whole shooting match and fitting new pistons. The pistons seem brilliant too, as some of you know he’s had them specially made up and they look quality and I was more than happy to give them a try. Many hours later with everything stripped, cleaned and renewed including a brand new set off ‘proper’ Alcon discs (yes they are expensive) we finally had a brake-bedding-in session. Even from the off my brakes were far better than they had been before and have just been getting better and better ever since. biggrin.gif They are truly fabulous brakes and if your FRP doesn’t have ‘fabulous’ brakes then I’m guessing there’s something wrong with them. Go and see Chris, apart from being a real nice guy he’s generous with his knowledge, conscientious in his work (and his pistons seem jolly good too!). 10.gif

Taking a wider perspective, as main stream garages loose interest in the FRP and its ‘differences’ become more problematical or too expensive for them to fix, I think the future of the car will fall to enthusiasts like Chris (and others like him) and the forums dedicated to our cars then become even more important as we rely on each other to fix our problems or point us in the right direction. I’m not worried about this actually, should I be? ph34r.gif

Thank you for your kind words.... bleh.gif bleh.gif

Must be nice to be braking on proper thick discs and pads.... laugh.gif laugh.gif ............. 22mm was ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

I'm keen to get these pistons out to as many owners as possible as they really do make the brakes feel very responsive indeed.... (of course the service helps too wink.gif )... guess i'll just have to be patient and let it run it's course..... not exactly an everyday purchase... laugh.gif only 2 sets left of this current batch now....then there will be a two month wait again...

After meeting Chris yesterday all i can say is the guy is a legend! 10.gif

As has been said once garages cant be arsed and lets face it 99.9% of Ford garages have no idea what an FRP is let alone are competent to deal with one - i would much rather an enthusiast who owns one and serviced many have a tinker with mine. I understand where some of the concerning comments come from with regards to accidents but we were joking about this during the service and i was happy with the workmanship and attention to detail given and me being naturally inquisitive was asking questions so i knew what he was doing (for my own benefit and knowledge for future) and like i said i was comfortable with what was being done and what he did for me too. bleh.gif

AND lets face it if he is willing to drive mine and let me drive his then that says a lot too... 7.gif

Once again Chris, well done on the good work...long may it continue! ja_cool.gif

It's nice to drive other FRP's... several years down the line it's surprising how different they all feel... smile.gif

interesting we are on the piston thread for some reason... ja_stupid.gif
