Dear all, what is the general feeling on upgrating the little front disc/calipers on cars equipped with the 239mm dia discs(up to 2000 i understand)?

do you just fit the setup from a post 2000 car or is there somthing better out there while retaining the 15" wheels and the hubs /hub carriers etc..........

Cheers all

Pete

i'm fitting Fiesta ST 280mm fronts. fit under 15s

300mm can fit under 15s, but you need to grind back the caliper & carrier, despite the calipers and carriers being cheaper the disks are expensive as hell, iirc its around £25 for mintex brake pads, then £55 for a pair of ST170 disks

can get some ST150 pads and disks for around £40-£45ish, again, mintex.

you can just upgrade to 260mm disks, off a mk5 fiesta ZS,post 2000 puma or mk6 fiesta. but after my focus & mx5, i've been spoiled for brakes, want 280f/260r

Indeed, thanks for the reply, I also am spoiled, my other car is my Lancia integrale, and the puma feels somewhat under braked...........

Cheers

it's annoying, on my focus it had 260mm disks all round, but twinned with an excellent ABS system, TCS and ESP. the brakes were incredible. stopped me writing my car off against a sheep... 60mph to 0 in less than 20metres, not one chirp from the tyres. mx5 had the same, but without ABS etc. so any hard braking under 25mph was met with a hopeless slide towards something, above that they were superb...

some sizes for you that i know are compatible

240mm vented:
-Ford Fiesta 1.25 (mk5)
-Ford Fiesta 1.4 (mk4 &5)
-Puma (<2001)
-Streetka/Sportka

260mm vented:
-Every mk6 Fiesta bar the ST
-Possibly the mk7 Fiestas, however they have different calipers, and possibly different carriers etc.
-2001> Puma
-Fiesta Zetec s 1.6 (mk5)

260mm solid rears:
-mk1/1.5 Focus from 1.8+ models (needs modification to run ABS)
-mk6/mk6.5 Fiesta ST (needs modification to run ABS)
-FR Puma (100% compatible with ABS, no need for lathing the hubs and switching abs rings)

280mm vented:
-Fiesta ST (mk6/mk6.5)

280mm solid rears:
-Focus ST170
-Possibly the mk3 mondeo, not sure

300mm vented:
-Mk3 mondeo or ST170 calipers, with ST170 brake disks and the respective pads

hope that makes things easier to choose

bare in mind that 260mmf/260mmr brakes will knock the bias off, and you'll need a bias control valve (about £30), but it'd be easier to just fit 280mm or 300m fronts and 260/280mm rears. you can keep the rear drums with any front brake disk, but if you get 300s it'd probably be worthwhile getting rear disks.

i'm getting 280mm fronts, so if a set of FRP rears come up for sale, i have the option of going for them. hate working on drums

EDIT: wow this post was longer than i intended... lulz

Ahh thanks for the info, in reality, i think I will look for the 260mm or 280 mm fronts, wont bother messing about with rear disc conversions, she is only a 1.4, but I just feel that it needs a rather hard shove on the pedal to slow it down.....

So if you get the 280 mm discs and calipers, the standard hub mounts to the new brake caliper ok?

Cheers
Peter

yeah should be a straight bolt-on job providing you have the calipers and carriers. don't think alloy-wheel clearance will be an issue either, even if it is, some 3mm spacers for about £5 will sort it. (apparently Puma Fan alloys have low spoke clearance RE calipers)

Right, now we are talking :-) so, those are Mk6 fiesta sT and they will bolt on to the standard hubs and fit under the standard wheel? I dont know the name of my alloys pattern but it is the standard puma wheel from 97 to 99, could well be called the fan pattern...................... whats the going rate for a pair of calipers without discs? i would buy new discs........... and does anyone have any used ST calipers for sale?

Cheers Guys

Pete

I paid £150 with discs and fast road pads, and yeah they fit under standard 15s
