Hi, I'm new here, I bought a steel blue 1.7 Puma (2001, 72,800 miles £1650 FSH) at the weekend, brilliant fun little car which has replaced a 2.2 Astra Coupe, my only question at the moment is about the brakes and is it possible to improve them by fitting better pads?

Better (read more expensive) pads won't make a massive difference. If you need new pads anyway might be worth getting some Green Stuff pads, have heard good things about them.
Without spending big money on larger discs and calipers, making sure the existing setup is working perfectly would be a good idea, remember they are now 12 years old. Flush and replace the brake fluid would be a good starting point.

Hi, Welcome
Have a look in the site Wiki Guide about upgrading brakes.
Green stuff pads and dot 5 brake fluid help, but bigger disks are the real fix.
Headlights are the other Puma Achilles heel.
Halfords Extreme brilliance bulbs will help you out there
Make sure your cam belt change is up to date and you keep it topped up with oil.

Green stuff pads... Do they still sell them?
They were never a choice to consider on my last car. Mintex 1144s were a fast road pad, CL5/6s, Pagid Blue or Ferrodo DS

Mine are good on main beam but dipped are a bit weak.
One week in and I still think it's a great little car, found some minor rust at the bottom of one rear wheel arch, nice little water trap there, has anyone tried filling this up so that the water can't collect there?

I'm on my 2nd ptmaamd the rear wheel arches rusting is a common issue. Bit of rub down, dab of kurust and touch up paint every few months is the simplest way to go. It I'll probably keep coming back once it starts.
