Canon 400D and a Canon EF 70-300mm IS lens. Have just changed from Pentax to get the increased focussing speed.

Thanks for comments smile.gif

Certainly paid dividends as the focus is pinsharp . Further question handheld or tripod? and average, centred or spot metered?

Handheld. Went across to Farne Islands for puffins and terns. Probably spot metered - can't remember !!

I'm doubley impressed. Hoping to find some puffins myself over on Skomer Island this summer and also some seals. Will post up some inferior shots from last year taken off Skomer tomorrow if I get a chance. Handheld with shakey hands!!

tell me about the shaky hands - I have taken lots of handheld shots recently that look good when viewed small. Blow them up to monitor size and you see that they are not so sharp after all!

Thankfully I have the sense to use a tripod some of the time but you simply cannot use a tripod for some things!

You could have used a tripod for the puffins (as long as you could have squeezed it on board a full boat!! For the terns you need to be mobile!!

I dont recall that nikon prodced a VR lens in my price range when I bought camera and lenses a couple of years back. As you say tripods are difficult to cart around I compensate by taking multiple shots trusting one or two will hit the right spot. Some shots are taken from moving boats so a stable platform is nigh on immpossible.

The sea was so choppy the boat was up and down and side to side. It was a real test for the IS lens but 99% of shots taken from the boat were sharp (although the horizons were a bit askew on several!! The shots I posted were taken on dry land (Inner Farne)
