Right, been thinking about this for some time...

Fancy taking my Puma for some airfield experience. Dont want track days, cos i'd be too worried about damaging the car at this stage, but airfield sounds much better cos there's nothing around for me to hit... lol.

But...

How/where do you find out about such places... preferably not a million miles away from me.

Typing things like Airfield, Car, Track, Middlesbrough, North East etc into google just gives me details of the fact that both Teesside and Newcastle airports have car parks!

Airfield trackdays are OK, but don't really compare with the thrill of driving on a proper track, although they are quite good for learning how a car handles at the limit. The main problem is that they are a bit featureless and don't have any of the elevation changes that make tracks like Brands Hatch and corners like Quarry at Castle Combe, so interesting. Not all circuits have limited run-off - Bedford Autodrome is pretty good, for one, and I'm sure there are others that are similar. It's also not a given that you will go off - drive within the limits of your car and you'll be fine; drive like a maniac on your first outing and you won't be fine. It's all a question of matching ability and experience to speed.

Remember to check that your brakes/tyres/suspension are all in good order before going on track. The Puma is a bit soft as standard for track work, but it will still feel pretty good at 8/10s - beyond this it's a bit understeery.

Lee, Considering the fact that most race circuits are old airfields etc anyway, then you should not hit much.
Also run-of areas have to be provided as part of the circuit.

Castle Combe has as much run off as a road. Yes OK if you come off track and stack it you can stay off the edge of the track but we are talking like 5 yards run off or less in places. There is plenty in the infield but that is not normally where the car ends up if you loose it mellow.gif

Brands is farily good in most places for run off but is tight in a few places, as is Silverstone.

I would too go with an airfield but Lee if you do come off you might end up turf cutting with the front bumper etc. so it might not be without damage but at least it wont be 'hard'.
One FRP ended up on it's side in the kitty litter at Mallory but got away without a scratch cool.gif

Yeah - Combe is a bit limited in run-off, although I have managed to spin into the infield in the past. Are you doing the combe sprint in July?

Be aware that airfield days are more likely to chip the paint, some of 'em are quite stoney.
Bedford Autodrome has seriously large run-offs.

When i did my drivers training with the ambulance service we did alot of airfield driving and went to the top gear track too!! it is amazing! the feeling of space is out of this world

I did skid car training at an airfield too - if u ever get the chance - do it do it do it!

Its all very different to track days - not necessarily better - but just different, so well worth a go!

I'm looking for an airfield day at some stage as having been on 2 trackdays with my new car I still don't really know the full limits of the car especaily in the lift off oversteer department as the circuits I've driven are such that I'm not brave enough to lift off "to see what happens" as gravel plus tyre walls = expensive!!

Had a couple of grass moments at Croft where the choice was take out exit cone and my splitter (and next turn in cone!!) or go round them on the grass and save Å“400.
