So I was on my way home today and the traffic was busy as normal but moving at a ok speed between 30-40 when about 2 cars in front of me a cat dashes out in to the road and is hit by the van in front of me. Well the Van driver didn't stop to just make sure it was OK or needed assistance.

So as the van went passed I stopped in the road and put my hazards on as the cat was in the middle of the road still trying to run except it had lost the use of its back legs and was fading fast so I got on the phone to the police as if i stayed there much longer i would start a massive traffic jam.

It was at this point people started beeping and getting angry at me as they "just wanted to get home "the nice lady at the police centre put me through to the local police control centre but the phone rang for 5 mins so I moved the cat off the road and moved my car down the road and called the vet which was just down the road and they came straight away but the only place to park is across the road and I turned my car around and went and parked with them.

It took about 5 mins to get across the road cos no one would stop and let us cross and once the cat was in the basket and we made it back across the road no one would let us back out of the lay-by and we where sat there for about 10 -20 mins waiting for a gap in the traffic to get out again. Now i ask you where have all the friendly people gone why doe's no one let people out any more or even think about stopping when they have hit a animal i would say it was the least you could do if you have hit some ones pet?

Because people dont give a poo anymore mate. Not about a cat, a dog, a horse or a person.

How many people will drive passed an accident rather than stop and help "because its not their job".

I've had two bad accidents, and whilst one on the M1 i wouldnt blame people for not stopping - its not a safe place at the best of times. but when I was knocked off my bike, even the woman who reversed off her drive causing it couldn't be arsed to stop.

Welcome to caring sharing Britain

People can be so cruel.... but at least you showed some compassion, it would've been so easy to just think 'oh well, noone else is doing anything, why should I?'

I have a similar story....

A couple of years ago, a nova full of 'young lads' ran over a cat outside my friends' house.... didn't stop, don't think they could've anyway! Was a narrow residential road, they must've been doing about 55-60 mph at least!

A few of my friends' neighbours saw it happen, noone went to see what had happened to the poor puss.... until I did, and then they all came wandering out of their gardens to see.

I never did find out who the cat belonged to, but it got a burial...

Makes me so mad! I know you have to report it if you run over a dog, but not a cat... there must be loads of people out there who just never know what happened to Tiddles sad.gif

I think its a shame that people don't stop, normally if I see an accident I stop to check if people need help, and I also make sure if I see a biker who is stopped in an odd place I stop and check if they need help, which goes back to me having engine problems one night and out of a whole line of cars that went past only one person stopped to ask if I was ok, another biker.

If I hit an animal I'd at least try and move it out of the road and see if it was dead sad.gif

And I realise this is off topic, but is it just me or do people walk out into the road more without looking now? A girl walked out into the road in front of me earlier and only seemed to notice me due to the sound of rubber grinding against tarmac and the clouds of tyre smoke. She stopped in the middle of the road and just started laughing...wtf???

Following a recent accident in my village I actually filmed the incident in case the Police needed any evidence (I got there 20 seconds after it happened) and kinda went around everyone to make sure they were OK.
Now I look back on it and I seem quite arrogant in the way that I was saying stuff like 'are you okay' or 'help is on it's way' just generally reassuring people and checking that the ignition was off in the car. If I'd moved anyone and caused them accidental harm I'd probably be locked up. But I felt I had to do that instead of assuming others had done so, rather than just join the crowd of rubbernecking bystanders (annoyingly common and a hinderance)

<soapbox> It's not Britain that's at fault, it the stupid compensation culture imported here from the US that has clouded our better judgement in favour of overriding greed and selfishness. No offence to anyone that is a lawyer but sometimes I fell like shooting some of them for turning right into wrong and vice versa depending on how much you pay them 7.gif It stinks of vulture culture (as opposed to culture vulture) marketed as 'help' or 'assistance' mad.gif </soapbox>

Because the law, not commonsense, blames the bl00dy motorist for everything including our slippery slide into environmental oblivion.

Perhaps a bit insensitive, but if i killed a rabbit or a deer or a pheasant, then i'd def stop. Good game is hard to come by even if there is probably some law I would be breaking.

And before anyone gets on their high horse, all I would be doing is recycling, just as nature intended.

Thankyou for stopping. From a person who has spent days looking for their cat.

I later found out some old guy had found it run over and buried it in his garden.

We definately live in a very selfish society on the whole these days

legally you have to stop if you hit a dog but not a cat. Don't know why. Guess cos cats go out themselves but dogs get walked maybe?

When i was youg a cat got killed on our street, very quiet street. Mt little sister and i (well i did the scooping) put it in a bag then a sack and walked round our entire neighbourhood until we found the owner. They were very grateful.

I also let people out at junctions and lay byes.

The law has changed now (well the new law is written up and I believe it is now in force but may not be). Cats were classed as wild animals and owners couldn't be prosecuted for damage their cat had done etc. Now they are officially the responsibility (essentially property) of the owner and that means they legally have to be kept indoors at night (don't get me started on the ethics of keeping a nocturnal animal in at night) and you will have to stop if you run one over. I guess most people don't even know the law has changed though sad.gif

Thanks for stopping, we need more people like you to outnumber the rest (make sure you breed!!! It has occurred to me recently that the next generation will be 90% chav if the rest of us don't breed like they do!).

Never had a roadkill before. even though i am doing 70mph, i do emergency braking to miss the rabbit or pheasant. Feel sad for the dead rabbits that lie on the A66 while I drove home from Lake District. total rabbits died along that route must be almost 20 in a day...

Dont hit a deer with a Puma, they are tough beasties and will do a load of damage to your car. Nearly copped a faun this morning though - bloody thing was stood in the middle of the road.

Hit a full grown deer about 20 years ago, totally destroyed the car. Was gutted about the deer but not the car (Morris Ital! puke.gif )

Going at bit off topic, the perfect citizen for a Government is a lazy, get everything for nothing, stupid, believe-everything-they-are-told by the media and press, small World, do-what-they-want-so-they-are-happy type person. No wonder this Government encourages such people to live and multiply amongst us...they don't want anything that will threaten or disagree with their 'plans' and that includes certain religions.

Another load of lyrics from the rather leftist views of Heaven 17 in the early 80s (great song BTW):

(everybody move to prove the groove)
Have you heard it on the news
About this fascist groove thang
Evil men with racist views
Spreading all across the land
Dont just sit there on your ass
Unlock that funky chaindance
Brothers, sisters shoot your best
We dont need this fascist groove thang
Brothers, sisters, we dont need this fascist groove thang

History will repeat itself
Crisis point were near the hour
Counterforce will do no good
Hot you ass I feel your power
Hitler proves that funky stuff
Is not for you and me girl
Europes an unhappy land
Theyve had their fascist groove thang

Brothers, sisters, we dont need this fascist groove thang

Democrats are out of power
Across that great wide ocean
Reagans president elect
Fascist God in motion
Generals tell him what to do
Stop your good time dancing
Train their guns on me and you
Fascist thang advancing

Brothers, sisters, we dont need this fascist groove thang

Sisters, brothers lend a hand
Increase our population
Grab that groove thang by the throat
And throw it in the ocean
Youre real tonight you move my soul
Lets cruise out of the dance war
Come out your house and dance your dance
Shake that fascist groove thang
(shake it!)
