Hi Guys

I have a 1.7 52 plate puma, I purchased it after my previous (perfect engined) puma was taken out by a truck on the M5.

The problem is that when I take my foot off the accelerator and onto the clutch (stopping at lights etc), the revs hang at between 1500 and 2000 for a couple of seconds, then they fall to the default 900rpm. It's really getting on my nerves and I was wondering what the problem could be. Plus today the engine management light came on. I've done the DTC check using the digital display and it says' 'NONE'.

I am due to have it looked at as the rocker head gasket needs to be replaced (I can smell oil when my heater is on) and i wondered if this may be the cause of some of my problems.

I had a similar problem that went away after the main fuse was taken out and put back in to reset the system. Might be worth a try. Just make sure you have the code for the radio.

The rocker gasket usually starts leaking if the cam belt was changed and the heads were not cleaned off where they meet and the old gasket was used.
Sticky revs might be the throttle position sensor.

The ICV can be cleaned I think, there is an article in the wiki.

Don't rule out the power steering switch found on one of the power steering pipes. This can display symptoms as you have described. Usually there is a break in the wire which provides a closed circuit signal back to ecu to raise idle speed. Can be evident/ noticeable when changing gear as well.

Just another option to investigate.

Cheers

Ally

Thanks all for taking the time to reply...

I cleaned the icv but its still the same, I haven't tried the power steering switch as yet, but I'll give it a go. I may have to replace the icv as it looks like it may be the original one.

The cam belt has been changed and may be the cause of my rocker cover gasket problems, I'll get it booked into a garage to get it sorted.

Thanks again for the replies, I really like driving these cars, this is my 3rd! I didn't have many problems with my first two, so I never really had to use this forum much. I'm glad it's here though. Big thumbs up to the administrators!

I've found the culprit for the revving problem that I had, it turns out that it was the power steering sensor wire that had corroded, the break in the cable is very near the plug so I can't do a DIY fix on it. Looks like the cable and plus will need to be replaced

Again, thanks for the replies you guys have been very helpful....

Forum diagnosis! you can't beat it.........

Just renew wire up to break and rejoin.

Don't take to a garage as they will charge a small fortune likely.

Maybe somebody can help you with supplying plug with wiring then connect into your loom if break is too near multi plug.

Good Luck

Ally

I managed to get one of a fiesta at a breakers yard for £2... Result! I fitted it my self with some silicon and insulating tape to keep the moisture out...

I've gotta say...

This is a great forum, that saves people time and money...

Thanks !!!
