I have an frp and am changing my battery to a lightweight racing battery as part of my weight reducing project. Does anyone know if the puma batterys where different ratings from an aircon model to a non aircon model? I have just removed the aircon and want the smallest/lightest battery possible for the puma. Cheers

I doubt it as the aircons run off the engine not from an electrical source.

Have you gone for an odyssey battery?

I have not ordered my battery yet as I am wanting to find out the best possible one for my frp. I am open for suggestions from anyone else who has converted theirs to a lightweight one. Cheers

Do you know for sure if it will adequately run the 1700? I noticed the varley red top 20 is very similar but with male connections instead of the female ones on the varley 25. May be a better option and slightly lighter at 5.4kg against 6.1kg for the varley 25. Surely a much better option than a carbon bonnet saving 10kg against the old battery straight away and costing alot less(although I have carbon bonnet aswell). Cheers

To be honest performance wise i reckon your best getting a high draw battery than worrying about the weight. A good spark and well powered electronics is more important.

These are the best standard batteries money can buy:

Optima

If your looking for proformance get a redtop if your running a large stereo system get bluetop. Apparently these batteries we designed to send the space shuttle to the moon.

From the site:

Optima's were never designed to be "direct" replacements for a standard production vehicles battery.

may need minor adjustments or fabrication to the hold down clamps or terminals/cables etc to fit your vehicle.

Not a great start and from 17, 500 pennies a bit much, a hope no-one no here treats their car like a tractor and leaves it ditched in a frozen field for months on end.. maybe handy getting one if you do though laugh.gif

it only means that it may not fit your standard battery mount... which a smaller battery wouldnt anyway. The optima is roughly about the same size but if you had a problem just use a heavy duty zip tie right around it to hold it in the tray. Its not about leaving you car in a field for a few months its about getting the best you can out of your car. Its only £130 .

It annoys me when people spend time and money upgrading cars and they focus on fuel, air and oil but they dont give a toss about the thing that runs it all. Iv only just got mine but iv striped out all the old earth cables and uprated them and iv ordered a optima redtop.

ok, but will a certain battery will get you quicker round a track (if weight didnt come into it that is)? if performance is regraded as in durability of the stereo, climate control, interior and exterior lights then fine but I thought the primary function of a car battery was to provide the essential power for starting the car, afterwards its down to good spark-plugs, ht leads, decent fuel/air delivery ect. If its purely a weight issue then yea the lighter the better cool.gif

sorry dont mean to go off topic.

Their site certainly sounds like they know what their talking about though

I was gona go with a Varta Battery at one point but cant remember if it was the silver/blue type, good specs though

I have been advised to use the red top 30 as opposed to the smaller 20 and 25. Although it is bigger/heavier than the 20 and 25 it will give me reliablity regarding general road use and is 5kg lighter than the standard 15kg. I will go for the red top 30 for piece of mind although it doesn't necessarily mean you couldn't run the 25. Cheers. Ally
