Peeling Lacquer On The Front Bumper? Yeah, confused me too

So was jetwashing the car yesterday, and noticed something of a large bugsplat on the passenger side of the front bumper. Reet, usual technique, get the jetwash within six inches and hover back and forth over it. And it started peeling away something that looked like some kind of gelcoat.

Obviously I stopped.

Anyone know what kind of treatment is given to the bumpers, or whether someone had some something to it in the past?

I'm going to let my tame mechanical overlord look at it when I give him the car for the bodyshop stuff, but I'm curious as to what this could be. Being a bit new to owning cars, it's got me stumped.

Suggestions? I'll get a pic of it for later on.

New paint can lift under jet washing so if previous owner had it sprayed it might have been weak

I thought that, but it's near transparent, hence 'gelcoat'. Were the plastic parts lacquered on the MIllies? Also, it's unlikely to be new paint, I've had the car nearly two years, and the work that was done was on the other side!

Here it is dry, where it looks a bit clearcoaty:

Here it is wet, where it looks very gelly:

I mean, I'll get my paint man to sort it, but if that's been clearcoated then he'll need to know.

Any opinions, peeps?

I going to stick with originally the Milly was not lacquered as zinc yellow is a solid coat paint (not metallic).
But given they are 13 years old maybe your bumper has been resprayed and at that time a lacquer was applied.
Could you try a discreet polish somewhere just to see if the colour lifts on a main panel.

Worth a pop I suppose.

I'll likely add it to the list of things for my bodyshop guy to look at - no doubt he'll take one look at it and know how do deal with it.

Just thought it was interesting as like you, I assumed it would be straight paint, but perhaps the plastic parts had some lacquering on them out of the factory?
