Hi I have a Ford Puma 1.7 V reg, and when braking (when going slow) the pedal seems to make a noise, when i press it again it is ok, but when i took it to a garage they could not find anything wrong, just recently when i have been turning right, there seems to be a grating noise, i have to press the brake pedal and it stops. But yesterday the abs and brake traction control system control light have come on both together, and whilst driving along as normal there seems to be a noise coming from under the car. any help as to what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Usually an ABS sensor fault, diagnostic check will tell you which one.

sounds like you need to take it to a different garage... <_<

Have you taken it to ford, they can diagnose which sensor is playing up quite easily... or you can multimeter test them yourself and save a few quid..

Would be interested in seeing exactly what is needed to diagnose exactly which one, seems to be a fairly regular reason to post.

think some fault readers can scan deeper and pinpoint which one

a garage did mine a few years ago, and told me straight away from the scan which one it was

Hi
Thanks for the replies, taking it into the garage this week, not driving it at the moment, worried the brakes will fail.
Keep you updated, as to what the problem is.

did forget to mention, the noise is very intermittant.

They brakes won't fail.

Reason the noise is intermittent is that the car will only pulse the brakes if it thinks you're skidding.

Also bear in mind that it'll pulse at 13mph from a cold start to self test.

If you can live without the car and don't want to risk it, fine. If that's a major hindrance, then find an empty wide road, perform an emergency stop or two and find the lock up point (or at least how it behaves when locking up) - if you do need to use the car in an emergency, at least you'll know what it's going to do if you have to stop in an emergency, too.

Funny this, I've recently had the same problem as the OP last week! My ABS and BTCS lights both came on on the Tuesday, my puma's a 17, 2001 reg. with almost 110k mileage (have owned it since April this year, drive it to work and back only).

When the lights were on it did still drive and brake fine (though ABS was dfo off), but sometimes the warning lights did go away, but occasionally when I slowed down there was a sudden grinding noise, and the lights came back on again.

Took it to my usual friendly garage on Thursday who diagnosed it and fixed it on the Saturday. Turns out the track rod and hub bearing was on it's way out, and it was wearing down the BS sensor as well. All in all fixed for £240 (inc. labour), which I thought wasn't too bad.

Only thought I'd revive this post, just wondering if the OP had his fixed yet, and if so what was the diagnosis?

Hi

Thanks for your reply

I took the car to the garage, and they did a diognosic test, it showed that the abs sensor was faulty, which they did for me. The lights have now gone off, but I still have the intermittant grinding noise when i brake (only happens when braking when I am going slow) also I sometimes have the noise when I turn right, could this be the track rod end?

Thanks

Difficult to diagnose, track rod end normally exhibits itself as play in the steering.

Do you get feedback on the pedal when you get it whilst turning?

It makes a noise when I turn to the right, when going slow whilst pulling into a parking space.

When I brake whilst going slow it feels as though the brake pedal is pushing back up and when i brake again the noise stops and it is ok.

Thanks

Pedal pushing back probably means its still an ABS issue.

Thanks to the OP replying to my reply! :)

I was curious to see what was the outcome of his 'fix'. Ever since I've had mine done had no problems so far.

I took the car to my local friendly neighbourhood garage, they're a bunch of Ford 'specialists', as they used to work for a proper Ford garage further down the road. They couldn't get it to be diagnosed with the equipment they had though (no codes popped up), so they managed to hop on over to their old place of employment and loaned the use of their diagnostic equipment, pinpointed the problem, took it apart, gave me a call to have a chat about what the problem was and what needs replacing, and did so.

If it were up to me and the 'problem' is still bugging you I would take it to a different garage. Better to get the problem fixed in a time that suits you than have it go doolaly at the worst possible moment.

Mines just done the same. It did it a few years ago and it was the ABS sensor so I expect the same again, but hopefully not the same wheel.
