Yip, its around 8%

On wide open throttle, the ECU cuts the power to the Aircon pump, hence why you get power.

Most noticeable when driving steady and you switch the aircon off.

Run aircon at least once a month, else the pump seals dry out

This question always gets asked, it should be in the FAQ.

But it's not, yet.

Nope, not a problem, just one of the (very few) Puma annoyances.

matt when you say 8%, i presume you mean 8% of total power (so about 10hp) which when pootling around town (say pulling away at 1800rpm the engine develops about 30hp). thats a good third of the power being sapped by the air con. is that how it works?

Yip.

Aircon pump requires same amount of power to work regardless of how much power the engine is producing.

to show this. with car at stand still, air con on, try going for full steering lock, you may actually stall the engine.

What should happen is the ECU allows extra fuel in to compensate and ups the revs.

Therefore at lower speeds, the brain will either cut the aircon electrical power to the pump thereby disengaging it from the aux belt drive, or increase the fueling to the engine.

Either way, aircon in traffic is a good way of burning a lot of extra fuel.
