Hi,

Maybe some of you have had this... My 1.7 Puma has constant humming noise while driving more than 20 km/h. Doesn't matter if the gear is in or not, accelerating or just cruising, fast or slow, the noise is there. Someone has captured it pretty accurately here:

My garage told me, it's drive shaft bearing and they replaced it. Didn't make any difference.

Any advice is welcomed.

Thanks!

Endrik

hmmm hard to say. does turning afekt it?? if so, it could be a wheelbearing

It can also be your tiers, we val it stair wer :) if you run your hand over the tread on the tiers counter clock whise, you might feel like the tier has jagged edges, almost like a saw if you know what I meen, this can sound like this, and also many have mistaken this for faulty bearings. easyest is to try a different set of wheels :)

Thanks! Turning does not affect it. Also the sound is the same on tarmac and on snow so hardly the tires although this was a good bet and I thought of it myself too, before compared the ride on snow and tarmac... Forgot to say that the noise is metallic but very low...

Wheel bearings is the other obvious one.

Jack up your car and yank the wheel to all sides.. If you feel it's a bit 'loose' it's most likely your bearing..

you can also spinn the wheel whilst holdig on to the spring, if you feel wibrations in the spring, the baring is damaged. note that a wheel baring can be defective whitout beeing slack :)

I have massive issues with this and never found a conclusive legal answer to if you take your car into the garage and they diagose something, replace it and it doesnt fix, i would have thought legally you would be entitled to say replace with the original item with no charge

We have laws which protect the consumer, but nothing that covers a garage diagnosing things incorrectly.

To be fair to the motor trade, a law like that would make it very difficult to do a lot of jobs.

The noise is the same with what ever gear is in. It's slightly stronger when the speed goes up.

I don't blame the garage as the drive shaft bearing was probably busted too. My neighbor owns the place but they're actually specialized in Mercs so no wonder... :)

But obviously, if you pay 1/4 of the car's price for the repair, you expect to get it back with no hum :) The rest was sorted though, no worries!

bit of a funny way of looking at it..

depending on when Puma was purchased you were looking at £12-15grand approx..

i always think of my FRP as a 23k car..not 6 lol

sounds like a wheel bearing to me (or at least thats what ours sounded like when the rears went)
there was no slack in ours just a rough feeling to it. only use genuine ford ons or kits that have SKF bearings. i had motorfactor ones, they were cheaper but were gone in about 100 miles
my other toy has 470bhp
