hi,

i own a frp kitted s plate puma.
i bought this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...:EOIBSA:GB:1123
tailgate and high level spoiler to fit on.
my plan was to fit the entire thing as the spolier is bonded on, and i didn't want to drill my bootlid.
however after excitedly removing the tailgate and dropping the new one i discovered it did not fit.
grrrrr.
seems the mounting bolts are 4mm or so lower down on the new one, hence the tailgate does not shut or line up correctly at the roof.

it is not the brackets, the nuts, the struts.

so my plan is not to get a tailgate that matches my original one.

so any one know what year they changed and indeed why?

i don't think the one on my car is a frp tailgate and anyway i assumed the frp one was the same?!

i also wondered if any one has any good ideas how to break the bond between the spoiler and bootlid, with out of course damaging the spoiler.

i don't want to drill the origianl one as i want two so i can have a spoilered look and a standard look as i please.

cheers

adam.

I dont think they ever changed the tailgate...

My only thought is that if your Frp kit is bonded on top of the original arches, the people who fitted the kit may have
altered the hinges to bring the tailgate out level with the kit.

Silly question, but have you checked the original boot for any mods around the hinges?

The only tailgate assemblies on the parts system appear to be with or without high level brake lamp, however there are two revisions to the hinges.

There are also four different items listed as "Tailgate Outer Panel", but it is a bit unclear as to what is what.

2000 Ford Focus 1.6i Ghia
2006 Renault Clio 2.0i RenaultSport 197 - SOLD

2001 Ford Puma 1.7i Black

cheers for the replies.

as far as i am aware all of frp's rear quarters are fitted over the original arches. could be wrong though...

on my car they have been.

my original hinges look factory.

they are however mounted 4mm forward on the second tailgate(with spoiler) which creats this problem.

so its sounds like this maybe a hinge revision... Flash, do you know when and what the revisions to the hinges were?

cheers

adam

FRP tailgates were not at all modified.

Hinge Part no's are;

15-6-97 - 15-9-97 = 1046448
15-9-97 - 15-11-98 = 1054119
15-11-98 on = 1079993

Both the earlier numbers are superseeded by the last one, but it is not unknown for Ford to issue a replacement that isn't fully compatible with the other earlier parts.

the seller is about on here somewhere, maybe they;ll let you know what age car it came off.

My opinion, is to leave that tailgate in the garden and use as a seat, as the spoiler is over the the top for the puma!

That and the F2 spoiler do give amounts of down force though.
It was listed in the Ford catalog.

Though the likes of PS I believe have moulded off this original and there are plenty copies...
So whilst it is personal preference it does actually work, unlike most spoilers that just sit there and look pretty (perhaps).
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

as you say its personal opinion, on if the look of a spoiler improves the look, as for functionablity, as kat correctly says, the F2 spoiler actually works, and the evo too, wonders if the puma evo spoiler has same wing profile as a real evo one, thus cratating real downforce!

i know a lot of people don't like these spoilers but i like it, specially with the wide arches, and it does work, plus you get to still see out of your rear screen which is always good!
