Hi,

I have a 1.7 R reg Puma 90,000 miles on the clock. I have begun noticing the steering wheel vibrating often when on the motorway or A roads doing 50 - 70mph - especially when going uphill and stepping on the accelerator. There appears to be no vibration when braking.

Also, apologies this is not T,W,S & B - but when i put the air con on the engine seems to stutter - and then carries on as normal - is that right???

Unfortunately my knowledge of vehicles is limited, so before i drop it off at the garage if any of you could anyway offer any advice on what the cause may be or what they might try, so i sound slightly like i know what i might be talking about!!

Many Thanks.

vibrating steering - if it is too over the top, check you wheel alignment and wheel balancing. Also see if you wheels have damage on them ie warpped wheels due to pot holes.

aircon - yup it is fine as the aircon draws a fair amount of power from the puma itself.

I agree, the air con thing is normal. you wont even notice it when you are driving along and turn it on. it will also happen if you play with the elec windows when at idel.

as far as vibration goes, find a hunter 9700 ballancer to have your wheels checked out at www.ballancemycar.co.uk or have a free alignent check at a garage on www.alignmycar.co.uk they are lists of the best people in the country for that kind of stuff

If it only vibrates when applying throttle, it's usually a driveshaft.
If it was an unbalanced wheel, it should continue to vibrate once you get off the gas (and pref. dip the clutch), as the wheels keep turning thus vibrating. So test that. If it stops vibrating once you release the throttle, it isn't a wheel.

i`ve had it where my steering was shaking at similar speeds, had everything checked and everything was fine, then a mate who was a tyre fitter said it was my tyres, he told me to get the tyres changed. Although you could not see it the tyre had lost there shape, a manufacturing defect in the brand that was on there, so i changed them and everything is great now. Its just one other possibility.

I'll bet it was the driveshaft...
