Hi all

I've managed to acquire a spare set of lenses for my rear lights and I want to swap my orange indicator light lense with a clear lense. I know how to get to the bulb, but how on earth do you get to the lenses without smashing the plastics? Do I need to take this to a ford dealer to do it?

Any ideas peeps?

Spoon

Has to be carefully broken apart then sealed back together with silicon sealant.

Not an easy mod methinks.

Read this on thread a while back on similar subject.

Not sure how they've put them together probably an adhesive.

Heat won't do the trick, they've got to be pysically broken.

If you've got some spares at lest you can figure out a strategy for dissasembling them...

Hammer - chisel anyone?

I got the lenses from a scrap yard over the weekend, and could I break the b*ggers? NO! I swift thump with a spanner broke the plastic casing and I was out of there in a jiffy (no expense spared), but unfortunately none the wiser with respect to getting to my own lenses. Oh well will let you all know in case you want to change the back lights

Thanks for your help

That sounds like an idea - in fact that's almost how I got my side indicators off - because I couldn't get enough grip to twist them!

It does look great, and if it was easy I'd do it. The chances of leaks etc after though are much higher remember. Good luck.

I looked on my rears, would a knife help? Running the knife on the division should help the light to disassemble IMHO.

Following on from the jig-saw post..
...how about a Dremmel with the slitting saw attachment.
Saw blade's very, very thin...

That may work as well? I think looking at it, a tool of some description similar to your suggestion is required. Are we all sure that melting the glue definately isn't the way to go with this?

You could try heating up the dremmel blade first using a lighter or a torch, cut as finely into the line of the glue as you can, be lucky not to scratch it all up though.

I'm making an assumption here that the glue will be of an instant adhesive variety, so once set, it creates a molecular bond effectively fusing (welding) the two materials together.

Bit like polystyrene cement on Airfix kits...

...how many of those did I wreck as a kid trying to pull the apart after missing a bit out...

Depends on the plastic. It could stick to the heated knife and that wouldn't be good. But I think the plastic is heat resistant and will be more harder if You heat it up...
