A neighbour was chatting to me as he passed by and saw me polishing my puma. He was asking about how it ran and I said I had issues recently with oil consumption. He recommended that I use Castrol GTX 10w40 as when a car goes over 80,000 miles, the manufacturers recommended oil type is no longer relevant as it is too thin.
What do peole think of this suggestion? Is it tosh?

All that does is mask the problem and potentially cause oil starvation in the engine as the oil is too thick for the Puma engine.
What does it use, like how much over how many miles?

searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

I would only stick with 5w-30, as already asked what kind of oil usage are you getting over 1000 miles?

Well, 10W40 is perfectly okay to use in the Puma according to the instruction manual.
If the engine is indeed worn and that's what's causing the oil consumption it may use a little less if the oil is thicker.
However, you should find what's causing the oil consumption before trying to fix it...

Not sure about Denmark but in the UK you are only supposed to use 5w30 that meets A1:B1 specs. 5w40 or 10w40 are ok to top up with only, but I would only use them if you have nothing else available and it was an emergency.
