Then all you need to do is prime it with proper plastic etching primer, then paint it using "Rover platinum silver" its a pretty good match for the dash. Then clear laquer it, I have recently done mine and I also done the surround silver on my kenwood mask unit and it really looks the biz
Hope this helps

Oh and its really easy to fit

There are several problems with the Autoleads one -
wrong colour (this i think applies to all types available even direct from Ford - i sprayed mine with Plasti-kote 621/451 silver spray, and the colour match was virtually perfect tho )
The fitting is in NO-WAY secure - the panel itself is quite tight to fit (indeed i managed despite using upmost care, to snap one of the lugs off)however IF there is an internal bracket involved (a la most stereo's nowadays) it fouls the sliding attachment to the car.
Since you can't really use the internal bracket, the stereo doesn't sit properly in the hole, and to be honest doesn't attach to the car at all, it's possibly the WORST type i've seen.
However, i'm hoping someone replies to prove me wrong. I've ordered the proper Ford part now, so fingers crossed this one will work a lot better

The only downside is that you have to paint the ford part to match, but this is a small price to pay

Well just picked it up, and it's virtually identical to the Autoleads one - appart from the fact that it's a lot better in the "Sturdy" department.
Fitting it later (needs a spray first as it's black) and will report back.

It's just in the Primer/spraying stage now.
Word of warning to others - DON'T use any of the plasticote primer on these - they do not adhere to the base plastic. Currently using Standard Vauxhall car primer (Left over from a previous motor) and it seems to be working a treat

Ahh, that explains why the instrument pods and my grill now resemble aligator skin. Silver with laquer top coat....
Thanks :-)

Saying this, the plasticoate middle layer (Metalic 621/451) seems to give a great finish - it just needs some acrylic top coat and it should be fine (if it bubbles the metalic paint i'm gonna go mental at em!!)

Installation was a breeze - the surround just clips into place, and the standard DIN stereo metal "surround" slots (allbeit a little tightly!) into the hole destined for it Stereo plugs straight in, and all works a treat.
Changed the rear speakers to 6x9's whilst i was in the mood, and who whole think makes a good noise. Just need to get replacement 5"s for the front now
To those thinking about going for one of the immitations - don't bother. Just go for the original ford conversion plates - yes it was about £15 plus the Vat, but well worth it over the 3rd party ones
Oh and i found the guide on the yahoo group invaluble. I'll have a look in the FAQ's section, and if not there i'll post it there for anyone else looking to do the same mod.

I think your would be lucky to find one now, they stopped making them about 2 years ago, but if you fancy one it's a kenwood KMD PS970R and it comes with 3 pre outs, full remote control, quite a high spec, but was about £500 at the time  but as things have moved on I dont suppose you would pay half that for a similair spec one now
