I would recommend Canon. They are quick to focus.

they all have their strengths and weaknesses

I have used nothing but Canon slr and compact cameras for over 20 years now (4 slr bodies and 2 compacts) - their optical quality is superb, and as Pat says the autofocus on the slr lenses is probably the fastest of all manufacturers

I have no experience of the Sony, But I had an Canon EOS500N SLR and moved over to Digital with my EOS350D.
All my lenses moved across to digital and I'm VERY happy with the camera wink.gif

Has the 1000 got "Live View" that's the only thing I would like.
The later 400 and 450 EOS's have.

I have a 400D and it doesn't have live view ... wouldn't use it if it did - I prefer to frame my shots through the viewfinder

Yes, but when you can't see the view finder, like holding the camera above your head.
Live view can be handy tongue.gif

My Sony DSC-R1 isn't a dSLR but I swear by both it's Live View and rotatable screen functions which the Alpha300 has.
The bottom line is that I would be unable to take many of the shots that I do without these two functions.

I guess it would depend on whether you like to use the viewfinder or a screen to frame your shots and whether you need to take shots that mean that your eye cannot physically access the viewfinder. It's down to personal choice...

Live view is what i want both the sony and the canon have.

The difference is that the sonys Lcd screen is 2.7 and you can move the screen to where you want to view, good for taking

pics at funny angles and you can hold above your head and see the screen, its a real plus sign for me at the moment.

The Alpha100 is a great camera and does everything we want it to, but it is a fair bit heavier than other similar cameras, I'm not sure if the same can be said of the 300. It doesn't bother us, but a friend of mine thought it would be too heavy for his wifes delicate little hands laugh.gif

I have made my purchase today after having a good chat with a couple of people and a guy in Jessops.

I have gone for the Sony Alpha 300,as i will get more for my money, the canon eos 1000d is quite basic,so i'd need to spend

more to get more from a more updated version of a Canon. The sony alpha is a far better camera for your money than a 1000d.Plus

on researching the sony the lens are not as expencive as the canons,i can use Tamron and konica with the sony.

I can't wait for it to arrive and to have a play,we are going to london soon so,i can see some good camera playing time coming up too smile.gif

Good luck with your new camera Julie. As Yvonne said we have been very happy with the Sony alpha. We progressed to that from Minolta SLRs as we can use the Minolta lenses on the Sony as they have the same fitment.

I suppose it's a bit like someone comparing a Skoda with a BMW, they are both very capable cars and do most of the same things, but the Skoda is a hell of a lot cheaper in a like for like comparison.

Did you try them first? I found a surprising difference between cameras; some I couldn't really hold at all as they were too small. I went for an A100 which has since been upgraded to an A700. Both are excellent cameras. Enjoy yours!
