I'm about finishing my project with puma (frp engined and gearboxed(lsd), big brakes+sport seats+koni sport+eibach+powerflex.
The car is very good for amateur\fun trackdays. But i need to do something with the car next year or in 2015 :)
I dont want to do common engine swap cause its:
1. Low power or too heavy for stock engines
2. Too expensive and very difficult for russian engine "specialists" (Tuned engine swap like any turbo on 2.0-2.3duratec, cosworth YB, etc)

The main idea is:
Mazda 3mps with 2.3 DISI engine mapped about ~300bhp as donor
Move everything from mazda engine bay with front suspension and wheels to the rear axle of puma (need to construct some cage or chassis for engine\axle).
Rebuld "new" rear suspension
Fix gearshifting
Fix engine cooling

i'll be glad to see yout advices, thougts, recomendations etc

ps I know its easier to buy clio v6! :)
we have too much m3 mps and they are VERY cheap...

Go Motorbike power.

I'm building a Hillman Imp variant into a bike powered track toy.
Mine will have about 250 bhp per ton, but once the car is built it will be quite simple to replace the Ninja engine with say a ZZR1100 or ZZR1400 lump for a power increase.

Seen quite a few of these started and they always seem to slow down when it come to sorting the gear change out.

Cable linkage will make things easier.

Puma hydraulic clutch master should be suitable to re-plumb to the back.

Spaceframe will keep the weight down instead of taking the donor chassis legs depending how brave you are with a welder.

Hmmmm the mazda 3 has the same basic chasis as the focus, I would think it may be to wide, and the front subframe of that is realy not suited for what you have in mind. A better bet, would be to get hold of a clipsport v6 rear end or something. Or as ian said, build something to mount the engien and gearbox in.

As far as gearlinkage goes. If you stick whit the frp engien, or almost any ford engien for that mater, the box out of the focus would fitt, and is cable opperated, and also has a hydraulic clutch...

You would also need to figgure out somewhere to put the fuel tank..

Would be fun to se how thos goes :)

sorry to jump inon this but this is one of my future projects.

basically use the full front end of a v6 mondeo and cut out the rear end of the puma to accomodate the front end of the mondeo. had this flying around my head for months now. and in theory have the most of the problems sorted.

im not giving to much away as all my plans and idea's tend to be pinched before I get a chance to do them myself.

Someone on here has already done it ;)
Dave in Scotland, fitted a V6 lump with full Sierra 4x4 system into a Puma body.
He uses it for Rallying.

got bigger plans now pal ;)/> see about making a tubular chassis with a custom central driving position with a drop top puma sat on top of the custom chassis. not going to give to much away but I recon I could make an epic track animal that weighs less than 500kg but has over 200 bhp and be rear engine and rear wheel driven for less than 2k so watch this space :cool2:/>

sounds good, but 500kg won't be easy, my mates MK Indy (kit car) with ali body panels and a bike engine came in at 450kg!

it may seem low and tbh im not sure I will hit 500kg I can design the frame and create a fibreglass body to be as light as possible but yet be as strong as it needs to be and just hope. I will be using a mondeo st24 or st200 engine, there not the heaviest engine but they put out a good power in standard form and would be easy to get more power from it without to much work.

Hi,

Before I built mine I looked at doing this (mid engine), and was going to spaceframe the Puma shell.
Current Rally regs have outlawed spaceframe, so that's why I did what I did, as I was building the car for stage rallying.

But, some observations on the mid mounted theme.............

To be truly mid mounted, you would need to use the Engine inline, and run like a Hewland or Renault 25 type trans axle behind it..................

If you are going to use a "Transverse" type set up, because the Puma wheels are right at the back you would in effect be creating a rear engined car, and I think this would end up too light at the front / too heavy at the rear.

However, whatever set up you decide, get that disc cutter out, start work and posting the pictures up..........................

Looking forward to seeing this evolve ;)

Cheers Dave
It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice !!
