Right i ithought i'd do al ittle test and see what i was getting per tank.

I filled up and let the hose click twice.

I then reste the clock to zero and then wrote down whn the petrol light came on.

I got:-

1 - 258
2 - 242
3 - 268
4 - 224
5 - 213
6 - 244
7 - 198(M1 = M6 Toll)
8 - 308 (Like driving miss daisy!)
9 - 267
10 - 228

Averging 245 miles to a tank.

I rarely drive differently but the two times i did i got both ends of the spectrum of fuel consumption.

I presume i have the oldest software on my ECU since its a 98 S reg Poooma too.

Alan did say that he can fettle the ECU to give all round better fuel efficiency, bhp & torque so we shall see after i have had that done smile.gif

Yeah, i get about the same.
One of the few things i don't like about the Puma is the piddly little tank range; because i use my car for work as well, i usually am in the petrol station at least twice a week.

I get about the same. I tried driving really carefully and got 42mpg. My usual driving is around 35mpg.

For anyone who's interested, here's a surefire way to work out your mpg very accurately.

1, Fill up (to 2 clicks)
2, Reset trip meter
3, Drive until the light comes on
4, Fill up again to 2 clicks (preferably the same pump as before so it's more accurate), and note the amount of litres you put in.
5, Whip out your mobile phone and calculate biggrin.gif

convert your litres to gallons:
litres / 4.55 = x
number of miles per gallon:
miles / x = mpg

eg, 280 miles, 33.2 litres
33.2 / 4.55 = 7.3 gallons
280/7.3 = 38.4 mpg

Don't whip out your phone in the petrol station.... Mobile phones are well known for bursting into flames and causing freak lightening storms (i can only presume this!) and so petrol stations tend to dislike them.

You've obviously not seen the Brainiacs show where they stuck 20 mobile phones in a caravan covered in petrol and full of petrol vapour!!!

Even with them all ringing not a single bang!!!

Does it matter how many clicks you do? Surely as long as you know how many litres you put in and how many miles you have done since you last filled up you can figure it out. May not be so accurate but the only real way is to take an average over time.

well, the first time you need to really fill up, the second time you can do it after you've used half a tank if you want smile.gif

but you will need to fill up to the same level again so you know how much fuel you've used

Somebody once gave me a very complicated moving average formula that didn't require you to fill up and provided both consumption and trend after a few refills.

Problem was this was before computers and spreadsheets and it was a right pain to do.

Now it would be a doddle. But I've lost it.

My last two fill ups (my ONLY two fill ups) got me 243 and 241. Mostly town driving, with an occasional duel carriage way trip.

The issue I have is the tank seems so small. What is it - 35 litres? My Corsa got 42-43 in a tank I think. I can notice the difference.

Petrol stations vary their 'fill level' gauges on every pump - that's why my mpg's go up and down - but you can work out the average over time

Note I've been getting 300+ recently - coz I've started using a new petrol station that's got it's fill gauge set quite high - means I don't have to get out of the car as often...

Try filling up every other day dry.gif

I do 150 miles a day and get about 250 from a tank. It feels expensive... 9.gif

Have to keep an eye on it due to the mileage I do - got to keep costs down

I just enter date, price/l, miles and total paid - the spreadsheet does the rest...

Nope. I just hate being in filling stations. It's like time stolen from my life.

The less frequently I go there the better.

Mind you the first time I got well over 40 litres in I reported the station to Trading Standards and they called round and checked the pump.

It helps if you can find a station where the nose of the car is pointing down an incline whilst you fill it. But best not do anything too enthusiastic in the way of cornering for the first thirty or forty miles!
