Had a fabulous day at Brands Hatch on Thursday, full day Open Pit Lane.
The weather held out and apart from a tiny brief spitting the day was warm and the track dry
Noise test was 98 Db at approx 4.5k revs.

The day started pretty crap really.
I went out and it was the worst experience I have had so far (have done 15 seperate track/motosport events). The day had the higest volume of super fast cars that I had previously experienced. For example there was a jaganaught that arrived with two Ultimas in it, and there was a further jaganaught with two Radicals in it. Both had booked a double garage each and looked to be hospitaility days giving out fast rides all day to their people. Plenty cars all rolled cage kitted out, not your average track day really, most of the cars looked like they would normally have been doing a test day, Brands were also doing ARDS tests that day.

So I went out and spent the time feeling hunted to the inner edge of the track all the way round. Came in very dejected which Gary saw clearly. So talked about it and that we had all paid the same price and that my car could corner very well. So with fire in my belly off out I went again. Gary rode as passenger which gave the extra pair of eyes to see what was coming up behind.

The end result was by the third (proper) time out other cars realised that in fact I could go quick and that if they had not passed me either just before Druids or immediately afterwards, they had to stick behind all the way to Braburn straight. It was incredible, got the pace so fast that I was no longer being lapped by the super fast cars, it was taking them two laps+ to pass again. Gary was saying more 'following' to let me know keep my line and do as I wanted as the car behind was not looking to pass.

Poor car took a beating though, used over 1/4 litre of oil and a first, Gary left the circuit to get more fuel, I had used a whole tank and was not through yet and what was left would not see us out! Spent the day in the 6-7000 rev range, used a full tank in 105 track miles, worked out at 13.5 MPG

I finally have the grounding I am happy with to now carry on working on for Clearways and Paddock. Both corners I have not been happy with and was looking forward to working on some more. Paddock is 4th with changing to 3rd for Druids. I carry 3rd all the way to pit straight. My next aim is to drop the dab for Clearways and Paddock, as this I feel is habit more than necessary as several times I did both corners with neither (just either a left off and/or throttle balance) and used all the track on corner exit with wheel feeding out.

Tyres, well impressed so decided I rather like my Dunlops (SP Sport Maxx extra load). The tyre wear was even across the whole tread face with little bias to it being a right handed circuit. Previously a day like that would have seen my old P7000 left slanted and causing wheel vibrations. Don't get me wrong, the tyres did wear down and get hot and soft, just the pattern of contact with the track I think held pretty true. I did roughtly 15 laps each time I went out, so the rubber did well, as it did not over heat and loose traction and go like mush.

This pic is after doing 50 motorway miles to get home, so does not truely show the wear that had occured.

It took driving all the way to Rally Day for all the tyre wubs to flick off, kept thinking there was stuff hanging out the boot flapping around, lol.
Whilst the tyres did not out right squeel, they did just hold the edge of traction, pretty much flat out through Surtees saw the rear jumping, which made sort of a banging type noise (jolly good job got a spare wheel tied down in the boot, need the weight). I love having LSD

This guy passed me on the straight, but followed me on the preceeding corners.

I had my turn being frustrated on the other foot as there were a couple cars that held me up through Surtees for example, one was an Evo 10!! Though I realise a car is only as good as the driver is confident, irrospective of the car.

This was super fast! Fully stripped out with a cage and changed seats that were about 1 inch off the floor pan

well done kate

looked like a good day, im gonna book a day at brands thinking of the 11th december, £109 for the full day indy circuit.

the frp driven on the limit is a very hard car to get past in the corners, we found nothing could get near us at bedford and had alot of people coming over to our cars after the sessions to check them out etc .

I'm off to Brands tomorrow :-)

First trackday in the Puma and only the second in a car but i've done Brands loads on the bike including the full GP circuit so should be reasonably easy to adapt the lines to the car. First session out i always take things easy anyway, pick out the idiots and see what grip levels i'm getting on the day! Plus i've bought trackday insurance (£110 for two separate trackdays) which takes some of the worry away, and you can't fall off a car.

I know what you mean about having really fast stuff, my only previous car day track day was in my old Skyline and most of the cars were trailered to the circuit. I had over 320 bhp and didn't even stand a chance down the pit straight with 90% of the stuff on track.

Hope you have had fun today :D the weather was good again I think :)

My normal insurance includes track day cover so I no longer have to buy extra on the day.
I have done the GP circuit and I prefer the Indy in the FRP.
Al, will that be in Orange Ears?

My only slight tripedation is 'if' the car decided to wobble for real we sure would be going very fast when the limit was breached, and I know since fitting the dampers the limit whilst is further away is much more snappily crossed, the progressiveness has gone.

It was indeed a good day. Spun on Paddock Hill first lap after my out lap! 35psi on a wet track probably had something to do with it! Fortunately i stayed on track so straight back into the pit, pressure down to 29psi and no problems for the rest of the day. However i would not recommend Vredestein Sportrac tyres for a trackday, could feel the side walls flexing all over the place!

Very happy overall with the way that the Puma handled the bends, only the Caterham's and Westfields out cornered me on the day. Oh, and three very quick Focus RS's which i'm told were running about 380bhp, i'll having one of those in a couple of years me thinks.

On another note something is now creaking on the front left, i'm thinking it's the bushes? It's been 4 years (but only 2k miles0 since they were last replaced.

Who are you with? I could do with some annual trackday cover.

The car looks great!

I did my first track event at Cadwell a few weeks ago, there was someone there with a Melina Puma that really took some passing!

The light weight stuff does seem to fly along the straights and out of the bends, but you can still have great fun in something moderately quick with sound handling.

Bet you were exhausted at the end of the day, we did an evening, 72ish track miles between three of us, and I was knackered!

My tubby little car was doing around 12mpg, so 13+ isn't bad! Given that it was only open for just over 2hrs though, we didn't do much sitting around.

How many cars were at the event in total?

2000 Ford Focus 1.6i Ghia
2006 Renault Clio 2.0i RenaultSport 197 - SOLD
2005 Honda CR-V 2.0i Executive auto
2001 Ford Puma 1.7i Black

I have a policy with Adrian Flux. All mods named and covered like for like, limited mileage and track day cover.

The FRP is not happy with over inflation, lucky the spin was on the tarmac :) did not think it rained Monday, but it sure did over night.
Not sure about your bush wear or not.

Rawaction photography normally take great shots too, might go off and take a look :)

Yep very glad Gary drove us home as I was rather pooped ;)
My day was pretty full I think.
Cadwell is apparently very tiring. Your car got a pounding then for 2 hours, hope it got some TLC afterwards :)

Sure did, coped admirably though, aside from a squeeking aux drive belt the following day. Just got a replacement and tensioner today, so that will go on soon.

I am looking forward to doing a full day somewhere soon, just getting more concerned about the weather at this time of year, so may have to wait for the spring. Having had some exposure to Cadwell I am looking forward to going back with more knowledge and energy. Also fancy Oulton. If I go to Cadwell I will probably have to include my Dad and sister again, which is hard on the car (and me) as you are inclined to make the most of every minute, rather than taking a breather. Hopefully with a full day to go at the pressure will be off a bit. With more time we will also definately take advantage of an instructor.

I am now planning on going to the Autosport show to pick up a helmet, I think it would be much nicer to have my own than rely on the rental ones.

Have you been around Brands with an instructor? Which company organised the event? The Cadwell event I went to was with Javelin, it was so well organised that I am no longer really bothered about going back to the Nurburgring - Touristfahrten is a farce in comparison.

Rawaction managed to capture my spin, well the aftermath anyway, you can just about make out the tracks on the tacmac. Looks like i'm about to go ploughing into that Caterham but had actuallly stopped by then!

Now that is a capture for sure !

I have had instruction once on the GP circuit and once on the Indy. Most events have been through Motorsport Vision.

Can't compare with the Ring as that is a public road. Would like to go again personally as the all round experience was great, though granted the risk was super high compared to a UK track day.
