Hi,

I am in the process of buying some 16" OZ alloys for my puma. I have spoken to the people selling them and they asked what car they are for and then said that I would probably need 5mm spacers for them to get past the brake calipers.

Is this true and also will I need them on the front and back wheels?

They said they can supply the spacers for £5.35 which seems fairly cheap to me. Are there different quality spacers that I should maybe buy instead of these cheap ones or do they all do the same job in the same way regardless of price.

I am going to be taking the wheels to somewhere like jetwheel tyres or a rapidfit or quickfit centre. Will they know whether I need the spacer on or not, and how can you tell!

As you can tell im new to the whole 'changing alloys' scenario as i've always kept my standard alloys on up until now.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I have 17" wheels on mine and i needed 8-10mm spacers for my wheels to fit.

This is true, but am guessing its bigger or smaller size spacers depending on how big your tyres are. not to sure on this but someone will help you out.

That does sound like a good price mine where £10 or more i think lol. As you can tell not the best person to talk to.

But i havent had a proplem with mine yet!!!!

Hope this helps a little.

Yeah thanks that does sort of help. My main problem with understanding is that im not too sure what spacers look like so therefore don't really know what job they do.

If they are the correct ET Offset then you will not need spacers.

I think the offset is the space between your brakes and wheels, so the spacers give you the gap you need for your wheels and brakes not to rub.

Think thats right.

i just answered the same question on your other post
being picky ... its actually the gap between the middle of the wheel and your hub, something like that anyway, its not based on the position of the brakes

the offset is how far the wheel is mounted from its centre line.

puma offset is 35-38. the smaller the number the further out the wheel will be from the hub. means more room for brakes.
if the wheels are the right offset you dont need spacers.

spacer is just a round piece of metal with a big hole in middle and four holes the bolts go through.
all it does is push the wheel out further.

that make any sense??
buy toyota celica GT4. fix puma, again. then sell

130 bhp upgrade and handling that makes the puma feel useless on a corner
now thats money better spent.

Ok cheers! Well ive just ordered my wheels and I didn't check about the offset of the wheel but I did give them the make of the car that they are going to be fitted on to so I hope they look up the offset on their system!

Im sure they will. I am getting them from a place called 'Elite' in Rainham in essex. Has anyone heard of it or been there?

as long as there not completely stupid you shouldnt have any probs with offset then, as they took the make and model of car , they should send out the right offset wheels

its all well and good trusting companies to sent out the right offset but on both sets of 17's iv bought they sent out et42 thinking that would fit with no problems!

maybe they thought given me frp wheels would make me feel like i have an frp?? wacko.gif

it is ideally better to not use spacers as this put extra strain on the hub.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale
