Hi All

I went to start my car (1.7i 1998) yesterday and it wouldn't start. After a push down the road I got it started, took it for a drive and parked back up outside my house. Went out about 2 hours later to make sure it would start and it did with no problems.

So, went to bed. Got up this morning for work and it won't start again.

The stereo, central locking, lights etc still work. So I'm guessing it's not the battery.
The car started after I left it 2 hours last night. So I'm thinking the alternator is doing it's job.

Could it be the starter motor ?? I'm just getting a clicking noise when trying to turn it over.

The car has only done 60,000 miles and I've had it now for 3 months.

Any help will be gratefully received.

In the process of buying a house at the moment so funds aren't great sad.gif

Probably a loose (earth?) wire somewhere around the battery / starter area

Rather than wait for a response here, test your AA / RAC - they should be round within the hour and will check the alternator etc for you !

Update (Sept 08): Puma gone after 5 years, now have VW 170 Tiguan TDI Sport and now have my weekends back rather than fixing the rust, HCV's, filling it up every 250 miles and worrying about the next timing belt change

Has it ever had a new battery?

Sounds similar to the way my car behaved - also a '98 - when the battery needed changing.
A day without laughter is a day wasted.

Thanks for your help.

I called the AA, and a new battery was fitted.

I'm now back on the road biggrin.gif
