The obvious question is, did you get petrol on your shoes when filling up? if not, does your filler cap 'hiss' when you take it off, if not, then the fuel filler pipe may be loose or split, causing a smell.
Regarding whether your car is safe to drive or not, i'd have a good smell around the car, to try and identify the source of petrol smell, if it is leaking fuel, then get it fixed quick if it is near anything hot.

A little while back i kept getting a really strong whiff of petrol when i stood at the back of my Puma, and i'd also get the smell of it inside too. Upon further investigation by a mechanic, it turned out my petrol tank had corroded right through and there was a big hole in it. Good old Ford build quality! Not saying this is the cause of yours, but worth a look

Mine was because the petrol pipe had rubbed against the brake servo and gone through.

That's the problem I had with my car at the end of last year. I needed a new petrol tank, just hoping the fuel lines are ok for a good while as the mechanic said they weren't great!
