have a look on the lightening motorsport web site and also shawspeed, they list some good parts that you will need, to do it properly you will prob end up spending the best part of 4-6k in parts alone, i know that sounds alot but when you actualy sit down and think about it you need to upgrade almost everything to make it worth doing as other wise it will be a big pile of broken bits very quickly, you will need a lot of custom parts as very few bits are availiable off the shelf so get friendly with your local engineering firm and find someone who can fabricate good quality parts, my advice, do your research, and if your serious then get collecting parts! thats what i did/am doing

First decide your budget, then if you want a "high boost" or "low boost" conversion, then decide if you want to buy new or second hand parts. You will have to decide on things like intercooler or chargecooler or nothing(!), custom low compression pistons or sandwich plate etc etc

Don't forget things like upgrading the clutch, fuel system, exhuast / cat, gauges, ECU, cooling etc

Just been looking on pumaspeed, and for around 3000,they can basically rebuild my engine to 200bhp plus, maybe that's a cheaper option, and more power....

Still undecided, money not really a problem

Thanx fir reply mate

I would think that the puma speed option would be the best, turbos are big funn :) but there is alott to take in to account when converting. as mentiond before. anyway, my personal oppinion (not that you should follow that :) ) is that the puma needs a perky fast rewing NA tuned engien rather than a turbo.

also, if you turbocharge it, it's mutch harder to pass eu regulations and rodside controlers wil se the turbo if you open the bonet. I dont know what the rules are over in gb, but over here, if it's not original, or Tüf aproved, its banned. :(

for £3k, id make your car 200bhp an all! lol. you can do that for about £1.5k!! set of bodies and cams and a good remap will get you close to 200bhp.

presumably raising the RPM limit of the engine WAY beyond what its designed for...9kish i would imagine to see those sort of gains..

I have found a much safer way of adding more power at lower rpm is to add a wizards of Nos nitrous kit with progressive controller...

All the torque you need and more, and without having to rebuild the engine and tune it to run a cammy high rpm setup which is going to be fuel thirsty all the time..

So what kind of gain in bhp can I expect form the nitrious? And fitting throttle bodies and cams ain't really a rebuild is it??

Were do I find out mor3 about nitious? And I'm guessing its gonna need refilling alot, what's the cost of that?

Also, wud it be wise to upgrade my clutch no matter which option I decide?

Thanx for replies

I'd definitely advise an uprated clutch once you get into serious levels of tuning.

You're not going to get close to 200 BHP with just those mods I'm afraid - more like 160. You're also going to need a full ported head, wild cams, heavy duty valve springs, custom high compression pistons, uprated rod bolts, standalone ECU, good exhaust system and manifold. Budget upwards of £4K just for the bits.

I would be quite intersted to know what this 3k price includes... I'm not sure in the fact of a gain in power for 75 hp at 3K.To just begin with, I think a pimple remap of the Ford's ECu is not sufficient, and buying a full programmable ECu is near £ 700

I'd be intrrested to see if pumaspeed have even carried out that spec on a puma before. I have a feeling they are Billy bulshiting and talking out there ass!

Personasly I think nitrous really is the way forward! For a full bullet proof setup with advanced control would be 2k ish. I have bought my kit for 750 second hand and that includes getting it serviced and filled.

Bottles are 60 quid to fill and can last minutes or weeks depending how you use it!

Just think how much more petrol you will use turbo charging or putting throttle boddies on?

The beuty of nitrous is that it doesn't use any more fuel than standard and only uses nitrous on full throttle when giving it beans. :)

I'm sure eldoods setup gave him 40hp more and around 70% more torque. You wont get that for 2k any other way. It completely transforms the car :)

Anyone that says it's not safe to use nitrous simply doesn't know anything about it!! Why would Chris and many others of used it with no problems for many years.

Check out the wizards of nos forum and Chris thread on his set up

if anyone is interested then follow my thread on my turbo conversion as the project comes along, the thread also shows the rebuild of my standard puma in to an FRP, as for the turbo i have ammounted loads of parts and still have loads to get but it will give you an idea on whats involved to build a high boost turbo 1.7 that should be reliable as produce some good figures, the thread is entitled 'FRP 591 comes to life' i cant make a link to it at the mo for some reason

cheers
