Rocker Cover Oil Leak

I had a very persistent leak from the rocker cover (oil dripped down the back onto the exhaust and created a nasty odour)
Actually I have owned three pumas and they all suffered from this problem at some time and I never found the clear cause until now.

Having done some research I have discovered the root cause of this annoying issue. Actually there are two main causes:

1. A blocked foam filter at the end of the rocker cover breather hose (in the air-filter housing) causing pressure build up in the rocker area
2. The damn non-ford gaskets that every garage fits as standard (because the Ford ones are not cheap) never fit properly and don't seal adequately - never use these!

Additional sealant is a messy fix and will sometimes fix 2 but if 1 is present then it will soon begin leaking again as I found

Fix:
Clean the small filter element in alcohol (or remove it altogether) - 10 minute job
Replace the gasket with a proper Ford one. Careful to remove any oil in the grroove on the cover as it will prevent the new one seating properly.

Damn thing fixed for good now!

Good spot. I'd fit a new filter, even though very small is worth fitting I think.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

After a small amount of smoke puffing away from the engine en route to work this morning I'm suspecting the same has gone wrong with my car. The mechanic was out fitting a new crank seal last week and said he'd whacked a load of sealant around the rocker cover gasket as it was weeping. Is it coincidence that it's now smoking? I also have the nasty oil smell too and the poor car still has an oil leak, this time from the sump.

If this isn't very cheap to fix then my Puma is going to the scrapyard in the sky. I don't have the tools to do it myself and although I'm not mechanically inept, I'm not confident working on cars. It's cost me about £600 over the past four months to get sorted and it's just not financially viable any more.
