Hi all

That's the second tank of fuel I have kept an eye on and recorded. The first time it averaged 33.6, this time she averaged 28.7

Mixed driving but seems a bit low?

What are your experiences?

Justin

PS How can I check to see if my tank is leaking, parked on a very slight incline and noticed fuel remnants on the wet tarmac behind the car, there was no smell. So it may have been the car that parked there recently.

tbh 33.6 is very good, 28.7 seems more like it, always though it completely depends on your driving style. As it happened did you do a longer motorway strech getting the 33 and more pottering about then recording the 28? Also remember the first half of your fuel gauge will always decrease slower than your second :)

Tank leak is best diagnosed by dropping the tank down and inspecting it properly. Although if you have fluid on the floor that may also be a bad sign.

I drove 70 miles on the motorway at bang on 70mph and averaged 38mpg according to the Scangauge, I think I averaged 30mpg on a full tank the other week.

Not unless it had failed I believe. They can degrade over time, you can soak them in lemon juice overnight to clean them believe it or not.

I'm going to have a go at reading any fault codes from the odometer.

odometer faults wont tell you anything they just relate to electric faults (if any) with the dials themselves and subcomponents

I do quite a lot of miles in my 1.7 on a mixture of roads.

Most of the time it gets around 40mpg although this dropped to 34mpg the other week following some enthusiastic B road blasts.

I owned my Puma 1.7 at the same time as I own my current 528i (E39)

The fuel consumption for both of them was pretty much the same at around 29-30mpg in normal driving and upto 35mpg on a run.

My FRP isn't too good at MPG.

My Best ever to a tank, mainly motorway and keeping the revs below 4K

I got a bit geeky and measured my first 2 full tanks brim to brim.

Tank 1 was over a typical week and a bit for me with a few long runs and more short ones, it returned 28.4 mpg.

Tank 2 was an 80 mile round trip at 65-70 and then a 210 mile motorway run at an average speed of a shade over 70 but very steady driving in light traffic, this one returned 37.8 mpg.

I didn't bother with the sums for yesterdays run over some fantastic traffic free moorland roads when I finally found out just how good the Puma can be in the right environment.
