Hi New on here and am thinking of hotting up the performance of the wife's 1.7 Puma.
I have looked at other forum sites etc and read about other owners fitting tubos or supercharhers and think this is just a stage too far.
I have come to conclusion that a suitable power upgrade may be possible buy gas flowing head flowing the head, fitting a more racey camshaft, performance air filters and bigger bore exhaust and manifold and getting the chip either reprogrammed ora new chip altogether.
All pretty basic stuff but I do want to end up with a reliable and usable car.
My Questions are
1. what sort of BHP increase could I expect with the above mods remembering a want a drivable road car and not a twitchy race machine.
2. Will i need to fit stringer con rods and pistons.
3.Are their any other mods I would need to do ie cooling/lubrication systems to complement the engine up grades.
I used to do lots of my own work on my cars so am reasonably conversant with the engineering but that was in the days when cars were not computer driven and you could fit more than a feeler guage into the engine bay lol.
your thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.

You've got big plans.
The on board ECU is not re programable.
Do you intend to keep the VCT?

Big plans but no hurry.
I intend to have the entire underside inspected and comprehensive welding done on any suspect areas and a full waxoil and underseal etc etc as first stage to end up with a 10year life on the chassis as I don't think their is much point doing anything else if the chassis become unviable after a couple of years.
I will also do suspension and brake upgrades before touching the engine and these are things I can do myself.
The engine mods will be last thing on the list.
I will be getting a professional do rebuild engine etc and am happy to take advice regarding this.
regarding your reply if the chip is not programable can you get a new one that is mapped for more power or can you switch it for one that is? This is an area where I am a complete numpty.
When you say am I keeping the VCT is this the variable cam timing?? With regard to this once again I would have to take advice from somebody who knows their stuff.

The 1.7 is already fairly highly tuned. I've had a look into it and to get "proper/reliable" gains you have to spent out some serious cash.
Probably the easiest would be to carry out FRP upgrades to the engine. That would get you to 150ish so plus 25bhp. (Cams, inlet, airbox, ecu, exhaust, might be more required)
Not sure if they still operate but Lightning Motorsport had a package promising a usable 185bhp starting from FRP spec but they last updated their site in 2010 or something... the cost was a few thousand i think. Cheaper to just go and buy a faster car
(oh you could do some weight reduction too... internal trims, back seats if you were really after extra power to weight)
