I have a 1.7 Ford Puma and im 21. My insurance runs out on the 1st April and i will be 22 on the 30th of March.

Last year under my mums name i was insured on the puma for Å“800 with Direct Line.

Also after april im looking to get 17inch alloys on my puma and have it lowered and a induction kit put on which Direct Line wont let me do.

So which is the best insurance company to use who are cheap and allow modifications?

thanks

Just realised this is in the wrong section sorry

Best advice i could give is to try CONFUSED.COM

They search over 90% of the All the Insurers out there and put all the prices on one page so you can see them all. Saves ringing round or having to type in all your details on every Insurers website.

Give it a go.. it'll give you a good idea at what you should be paying good.gif

I think Matt mentioned a place where mentioning PP got you a discount.. they may be sympathetic to modders.

Try searching the forum for "insurance" and "discount"

As spenspuma has mentioned really, try one of the online insurance checking sites out there. Might save you some time and money. As for who is the best - ask 100 people get 100 different answers. There's a myriad of factors to take into account - age, sex, model, year, address etc.

Had my Black for 3yrs now and used a different insurer each year. As you're pretty young your going to get nailed anyway I would have thought.

As for the mods - THIS IS JUST MY OPINION - leave it as it is.

My son is 25 but has driven fast cars since passing his test at 17 so he has always been stung hard with insurance costs. He always found Tesco were the cheapest. Norwich Union Direct (quote me happy) is another one worth trying. Can't say whether they would insure modified cars though.

Hi pumafab,
Im 21, with no years no claims bonus as i have been on my mums insurance, and have a 1.7 puma with 17" alloys and lowered.
Ive only had my puma a couple of weeks and am insured with elephant for about Å“550 i think! They seemed to be the cheapest for me, but im not saying it will be the same for you! Ahhh the advantages of being female bleh.gif

If your mum only insured that car for you and no longer has insurance, she can pass the year's NCD to you - that will bring the cost down a bit for you. I passed mine over to my son as I was insured on the family car as additional driver.

Since buying my Puma just over 3yrs ago I've had wildly differing quotes.

To start with Direct Line were the cheapest then when the price went up on renewal I moved to Tesco. Right now I'm with Adrian Flux who were by far the cheapest when I was getting quotes in October and they are OK when it comes to modifications. In fact they specialise in modified/specialised vehicles etc. They (in theory) also give discounts if you are a member of a recognised car club such as this (although they didn't give me a price before the discount just a price inclusive of the discount).

I didn't have much luck with online quotations when it came to declaring mods, most just did not want to know.

Best advice is shop around and get plenty of quotes. I was 31 when I bought my Puma and got quotes from around Å“700 to Å“2000!!! ohmy.gif 19.gif wacko.gif And that was with three years NCD!!! One company even stipulated that noone under 30 was allowed to drive the car. I kept thinking some of the companies must have mis-heard me when I said "Puma" and thought I'd said Porsche or something!!!

Btw, it's always best to declare mods - otherwise you could find your insurance invalid in the event of a claim.

it is Adrian Flux but you have to be a subscriber to this site to get it smile.gif
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

Admiral or Bell are good for young drivers, my Focus is with Admiral. The Fiesta is with Bangladesh (Norwich) Union, who are quite good, apart from the ethnic call centres.
As said, though, Confused is very, very good.

Been hunting all day had stupid quotes from 2k

I eventually found Direct line and Tesco both around Å“600

Thats using my mum as the policy holder and me as the named driver smile.gif

I know direct line are harsh with mods and ive heard tesco are ok with them so i might try direct line first when i have to renew and if they are dead against mods then ill go to Tesco smile.gif

I'm 29 and currently paying Å“500 (RBS), but its up for renewal next month and the best quote so far is privilege Å“420... Protected no claims and the Mrs as a named driver etc smile.gif

and your renewal will be very similar to this as RBS, directline, tesco, churchill, privilege are essentially the same people as the are all subsidiaries of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc

Update (Sept 08): Puma gone after 5 years, now have VW 170 Tiguan TDI Sport and now have my weekends back rather than fixing the rust, HCV's, filling it up every 250 miles and worrying about the next timing belt change
