I'm not very mechanically minded (See,Cannot even spell it tongue.gif ) But what exactly is an induction kit and what does it do? Also what are goods ones and bad ones?

what is it?
replaces your std paper filter ith a larger cone
what does it do?
allows more air into engine
good ones are heat shielded and come with cold air feeds
bad ones, hmmm, maybe some cheaper ones are poorer quality and more prone to letting dirt in or ripping etc... doubt theres much in it from brand to brand to be honest!

Fast Ford did a test of induction kits on a Fiesta ST last month. There's very little to chose between them, really its best to go with the one you think looks best.

main ones being KnN or Pipercross

KnN are paper filters and Pipercross are foam/sponge type

i think its pretty much a noise thing, they give a roar as they suck air into the engine

They only really make a difference top end, not just tootling round, you really need a cold air feed routed to it for maximum benefit, but to be honest with the warmer weather you are better off with the standard airbox, with perhaps a k&n, pipercross element along with a cold air feed.

iv had a cone before - sod all difference. on my frp iv just added a drainpipe sized cold air feed direct to the airbox from the front grill, cost about £5 & good for 3-5bhp i reckon! the trick is cold air & lots of, any way you do that is a result, the cheaper the better

also got a kn panel filter

for mine i cut a hole in the flat plastic area behind the passenger side corner of the lower grill (behind the grill is flat bumper not hole!!!)

cut hole big enuf for drainpipe adapter from b&q - £1
spray up etc

cold air ducting from any motor factors & 2 huge jubilee clips - £3

connect to bottom of airbox!!!!

gets a bit tight against chassis behind the hole you cut but doable

while your there fit a massive horn!!!! - halfords - £20

If your looking for performance i'd probs get a new exhaust. The induction kit is more likely to use more petrol esp if you have a cold air feed.

Based on what figures? Did Ford/Tickford not work out what airflow was needed when they designed the car?

Wont your revised attempt not heat the air as it passes the rad?

another note about induction kits, they can be risky in the winter, if the air that goes into the engine is too cold it can cause the block to crack!

An induction kit is an expensive way of making your engine noisier while losing BHP.

3-5bhp is based on it pulling better, wouldnt get it rolling roaded for that!

mine didnt come with any form of air pipe, not sure what tickford decided, but it is part of the mother ford who do design very restrictive air intakes...

takes cold air from next to rad, not behind it so no heat added

cold air cracking block?!!! sorry, i dont drive in siberia!

fitted K&N cone induction to mine today. noticeable louder noise from front of engine and a little more power was added i believe as I think the car response seem to be faster than usual.

just make sure to clean it every so often otherwise you will start to lose more and more power as it becomes clogged with dirt
