Can anyone help?

I didn’t notice first thing this morning, but since I have had my car from its MOT it’s been making a tapping noise which carries through into the cabin, not overly loud but can be heard when the stereo and air vents are off. I took it back to the MOT test centre and the bloke said he heard it when he first started the car but ’forgot’ to mention it when I picked it up.

Anyway, from sticking my head under the bonnet it would appear it’s coming from the left hand side where the cambelt is. Every second or so there is a slight tap.

Any ideas what this could be? I have heard of stones getting lodged into the belt so that could be a possibility?

Turns out the water pump was leaking and this is what was causing the noise - Fraud Garage said I was lucky to have got it to them quickly ja_stupid.gif

Just a shame it's going to cost me £330 including diagnostic, and I might have to miss Castle Combe this weekend if they don’t finish it in time 9.gif

Thats strange - Coz I have a Dull knocking sound thats every 20 seconds or so. Kat has been through 2 MOT's since I first noticed it and no damage has been found over the past 2 years so I put it down to the car talking!

Shall give the water pump a check now though!

Cheers Mick

The problem was that I wanted the car by Saturday for Castle Combe, and there was no way I was going to drive a faulty car just in case the worse happens. The bill was steep but I guess that's main dealers for you. I was however pleased with the work they did and the fact that they squeezed me at short notice.

The bill is split as follows: -

£59.50 Labour to investigate knocking noise
£145.00 Labour to replace and bled cooling system
£10.32 Anti Freeze
£69.41 Water Pump Kit

Total ex VAT £284.23
Total with VAT £333.97

I rang Tremona Garage when they quoted me the price after the investigation was done, but Tremona advised me not to drive it away from the dealers just in case it failed. Not sure how many other garages would have said the same when there is good money to be made good.gif good.gif

Worth getting the belts changed at the same time if they haven't been done recently wink.gif

to fix the water pump means apparently taking the cam belt off, and we know what a job that is! so the price is not that bad.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

When I rang Tremona they said that the cambelt should be replaced as it would be contaminated, but when I said this to Ford they said the belt was fine and they would confirm this on the receipt which they have done, in theory, any problems with the belt in the short term would be covered.

Incidentally, when I was talking to the Ford garage they said it would be an extra £220 to replace the cam belt, I questioned this as I assumed it would need to be removed when they did the water pump, but they assured me the water pump can be changed without removing the cambelt.
