Put air con on for the first time in a while and car stalled - assumed this was because I was stationary in traffic and it had zapped the power from the battery so much the revs dropped to low, but..

it done it more than once - any ideas?

My Puma is fine but the Focus is a pain ...... have to switch air con off when pulling away from a junction (unless you give it plenty of revs) and when you're overtaking or you'll go nowhere ranting2.gif

This is normal, A/C uses a pulley from the engine to drive it - on the aux belt - and when A/C kicks in it puts a strain on the engine, switch it off in town, or increase revs to overcome it. wink.gif

Sounds like you may need to get your aircon topped up, or your pump is on the way out. This is not normal!!

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour or so to reset the ECU, then drive with the AC on. The engine should relearn and compensate for the additional load of the compressor.

If it still stalls your idle may be too low or weak- possibly need to clean/replace the idle control valve...may also be a faulty throttle potentiometer (common Puma family failing).

Doesn't the ECU constantly re-learn? i.e. when outside a normal range of values it starts again...

It does but slowly.

Resetting it is the equivalent of rebooting your PC which is usually a very good idea wink.gif

when you mash the throttle, the air con cuts out doesnt it?
I notice my car is much slower at part throttle with air con on, but give it full power and it pulls like normal

Thanks for the help everyone - not sure then air con was last re-gassed - might get it done and see if that help

it's got a new battery and alternator and I've checked it with a multimeter and all ok so it's not that

I used to have a similar problem in the FRP with everthing on - I've found it virtually went away with just driving the thing regularly

Must be a combination of the ECU storing data, battery topping up and the engine 'wearing in'

EDIT: I've recently had an AC regass - made no difference...

When the Puma aircon system runs out of gas it just shuts down AFAIK...
