AKA Gourmet and Gravel 2008

Well, following on from Seans original post, and a few since, here we go.

Details sparce at the mo, but Im sure we can start filling this bit up.

All updates will be in this post, so check back often.

Rough idea.

Friday night to Sunday afternoon with pickups along the way for people who cant make full weekend.

Driving - will leave that to Sean, Sam and Lee to sort out route, as they are best placed.

Events - decent meal out on Saturday night, possible trip to Eden, or maybe Heligan for the arborealists amongst us. Add to that that the Tall Ships are in Falmouth on this weekend and could be some excellent photo opportunities, or how about having a few hours at Go Ape! in Exeter?

Sponsorship - Lee was talking about a fun run for charity - not sure how we can work this in, but maybe something like PN's cake run would be good?

Location - Devon to Cornwall, nothing planned as yet, but saturday drive would revolve around getting to accomodation to change etc for meal.

Saturday evening - Meal and then party - beach would be good, but need foul weather alternative wink.gif

Sunday - drive back over Dartmoor for a play on the roads over there.

Accommoation - Im happy with either camping, or trying to source a cottage complex / bunk house depending on the majority concensus.

Right - Over to you guys down Sarf to give me a hand with this biggrin.gif

Friday Night

Loose plan at the moment to meet up at PumaPilots pub on Dartmoor. This gives everyone time to get together, before driving over to Bude.

Pub here - Trout and Tipple

So, bearing that in mind, the route for friday for the majority will be

Leave M5 at Jn31 - pick up A30 West to Oakhampton.

At Sourton Cross Services, head south on A386 to Tavistock, the pub is in Hazeldon.

After the meet up, head South East through Tavistock, to pick up the B3362 to Milton Abbot and Launceston.

From here pick up A388 to Holsworthy, then cut West on A3072 to Bude.

Map and route to campsite here

Campsite

Having looked around, I think I've found a good one for a base for the weekend.

Bude Holiday Park

This site is about a mile north of Bude, on the coast and has both camping pitches and caravan hire ( 6 berth for 3 nights is 125 quid )

Facilities on site include onsite club, and swimming pool! ( may be a bit cold wink.gif )

Evening meal Saturday

Bude has plenty to choose from, but personal choice would be Lifes a Beach although happy to go with the flow.

Can people let me know their thoughts on the above please.

We are eating in Port Isaac, to keep the travel down, and to give us more time on tour.

Restaurant is the Slipway, and we are booked in for 19:15. Deposit paid, so will be asking for a fiver per head back. Currently booked for 18, but can Sean and Sam let me know if they are bringing partners please.

These are who I have down so far to eat

NOTE Those wishing to book caravan, can they do so direct with the campsite please. at Gourmet and Gravel 1 last year, I spent a nervous week nearly half a grand out of pocket! and I'm not going there again!

Activities and Driving

Saturday

Several options open for this day, as looks like the driving day proper will be Sunday.

I've done some investigation. We can get into Both Eden and Heligan if people are interested, plus the Tall Ships in Falmouth Harbour for those with cameras.

Maps of potential route below

Campsite to Eden

Eden to Heligan

Heligan to Falmouth

Falmouth to Camp

As you can see, there is a bit of driving, but best to make the most of the day!

OR

How about driving down to Wadebridge, hiring bikes, and cycling down the Camel Trail to Padstow for lunch? Less distance. Could link this in with trips to Boscastle and Tintagel and even Newquay using the B roads rather than the Atlantic Highway.

Sunday

Still work in progress, and I'd be happy if one of the locals picked this up as a task. Only real criteria is possible meet back up at the pub for lunch, then head out over Dartmoor. Could possible head north then to take in Exemoor or go east to bounce around Torbay? Will leave that open.

Tomtom files

File enclosed contains the routes for the friday / saturday that some of you may be able to use.

I can do Garmin possibly too if people want that ( waypoints, but not itin. )

Flossie & me were thinking of organising a Dartmoor meet, but we'll recce a few roads out for you to play on, most of Dartmoor is like the new forest - meaning a blanket 40mph speed limit - mind you still fun to be had on the bends though.

And the coachloads of tourists in the summer too, we wont go too far off of the beaten track, to avoid the numptys who do actually own the road and usually drive a HUGE 4X4 that just about fits into the lane, leaving little or no room for anyone else to get past.

OK, Sam and I have had a chat over a large steak pasty each washed down with hot tea while sitting in the sun.

A friend of the family owns a caravan / camping site near Mevaggissey which would cater for trips Eden and/or Heligan as it’s on the doorstep (I will talk to her tomorrow to see what deal she could do if camping is the preferred option). As for routes there are so many to choose so we have decided to wait to see what accommodation people prefer and we will organise the routes from that location.
We will endeavour to select some good routes (very twisty coastal roads) that lead to nice beaches where we could have a BBQ (disposable ones from supermarket) and chill out as the sun sets or if the weather is against us then there is the Watering Hole which is a nice pub/eatery situated in the middle of the beach at Perranporth.

Now HiD ready. Are you ready for the switch over?

After G&G I, camping doesn't appeal unless I get a bigger tent....

...with walls

......and an en suite

Hmmm, done a search for tents with the above requirements but came up with a big zero.

its gonna be a great meet! the weather will be real nice that time of year, and there will be some awsome coast roads to go for a little blat on, think we should arrange a beech side finale with a big bbq and a few cold beers watching the sun go down cool.gif

I'm only having a laugh really, last time there was nowhere near enough room in the tent for the two of us and our gear and we'd pretty much decided then that we needed a bigger tent if we were going to do it again.

Although that Manor house would be cool if we could get enough people to fill it to make it financially viable wink.gif

Something to wet your appetites a little.

Took these on Sunday of Carlyon Bay from the coast road between Newquay and Padstow.
