Hi All
I'm running a Puma as a road rally car and one of the issues I'm having is with the wheels.I've been trying to use the standard alloys (with 195/55 tyres) but they appear to be cast from Playdough. The net result is that I'm having to change rims at a ridiculous rate, one event required the renewal of five rims. Can anyone suggest a good 15 inch competition alloy that isn't likely to fold in half on the next speed bump. I'd need 6 so it would be a considerable investment and I don't want to end up in the same situation with the new alloys. It would also need to be the same or very similar offset as I don't want to fit spacers if at all possible.
Another problem I'm having is with the front uprights bending. One of them seems to have pinched where the top of the hub clamp sits and resulted in the upright bending and hence the geometry shot to bits. As far as I'm aware I didn't hit anything side on with the wheel. Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a fix?
Any pearls of wisdom gratefully received.

Hi Mate,

You are right about the wheels, they are a bit cheesy for rally use. A pure competition wheel will be quite expensive, probably about £200 per rim unless someone has a stock item that will fit. The best people to speak to are Compomotive ( I think the TH is their rally wheel ) or Speedline Corse in Telford. The guy at Speedline is really helpful and will point you in the right direction, also, the wheels aren't as expensive as you think. The other option is to find some 15" Ronals ( off an Escort Mk5 I think ) as they are super strong and will take the abuse you need them to. If you can go up to 16", then the Ronals in this size are easier to get hold of and a bit cheaper. Let me know if you would go 16", as I know to a cheap set of 7 wheels.

With regards your upright bending, I've not seen that before, it may be worth bracing it to stop it happening again but do remember, the shock that bent the upright will be transferred further upstream, potentially damaging something else. So if you brace the upright, I would strengthen the strut top on the body as well. I hope this is useful, if you need any more info, let me know.

Regards, Al

Thanks for the reply Al.
It sounds like I need to give Speedline a call. Thanks for the offer on the wheels but I don't want to go up to 16's as I have loads of tyres in 15's and want to keep the gearing down as low as I can.I think I'm just going to have to see how I go with the uprights, perhaps it was just a one off.
