I think my gear box is on the way out...

When i have been driving for around 40mins... it feels like it is trying to pop out of gear... only in first gear though...

Is that def's the gearbox? What about re-conditioned gear boxes? They any good?

If it is does anyone know how much i am looking at for a new one?

Anyone know of a good place near me? I live in Isleworth...

Thankyou smile.gif

Does anyone know whether i could get a gearbox on ebay which is listed as an 02 plate car, mine is a V reg, would they be different?

Also, is there a modal number or code or something for the gearbox? Im thinking would it be the same as a fiesta or focus gearbox?

Anyone had to change their gearbox recently who can offer me some advice???

PLEASE??? lol

you should stick to the 1.4 for the Puma to ensure that it is the same ratios etc.
I am unaware of which other Ford car's carry exactly the same gear ratios as the 1.4 Ib5

Amy,

I think you need to etablish whether it's the gearbox or not before you start looking at replacing it given that you want to do the clutch at the same time it'd cost the thick end of £500. It could just as easily be the linkage or an engine mount.

In what way does it feels like it's going to pop out of gear ? What are you doing at the time accelerating / lifting off ? Is is worse at high revs / low revs ? does it ever actually come out ? Are there any other noises ? Are there any difficulties engaging 1st once everything has warmed up ?

Thanks for the reply..

This is going to be a really girly explanation of what i think happens!!! lol

When I have been driving for about 40mins, if I stop at the lights and change into first gear, as i try to pull away the car starts really shaking as if its going to stall, I have to keep putting down the clutch and really revving it to make it move off.

It doesnt happen all the time after the car warms up, only on a few occassions, but it feels like its getting worse the more i drive it...

Any Ideas???

Thanks

Amy

no... lol

Just thought I'd add that I also need my throttle cable replacing and the housing cleaned...

I had my clutch replaced a few months back...

Would that make a difference... not aligned properly or something?

did you get a new release bearing fitted with the new clutch?

you should be checking your fluid levels regularily, the Puma hates being out of oil especially smile.gif

Yes I think I did get that bit too... Not sure though, I had that done before I really started to love my puma so I wasnt that interested back then sad.gif

Is that the extra bit that you should get done when you change the clutch? If it is then yes... sorry for my denseness!

Other than the normal oil, I havent checked anything! what and where do i check?

check the receipt for the clutch work to make sure that a new bearing was fitted
in your owners manual will be about the fluid levels to check.
Open the bonnet, you can check
oil (dip stick)
these by looking
water
power steering fluid
brake fluid

Hmm... Well it doesn't sound like a gearbox problem but that could be so many things. Once moving do the other gears all engage OK ?
If they do then the clutch is probably OK too. It sounds more like a fuelling or ignition problem. Given your other post I'm wondering if your throttle position sensor is packing up.

I'm sorry to say this but you need the help of an specialist and one that can have the car to play with for a bit, I can suggest but without the car a diagnosis is a bit hit and miss.

It's been a while since I lived in London (South Ealing) so I don't know a Puma specialist or someone I'd be really happy to take a car to. Can anyone else advise ?

On my clutch receipt, it says i had fitted:

clutch kit
concentric slave cylinder
new csc and bleed system
clutch fluid change

is any of that the same as the release bearing?
