Hi as I am an idiot at car mechnics and stuff, I am therefore asking this question with is will std puma brake calipers work with 278mm discs for a ford focus. I think they ould not work but then again I drew out a diagram and compared the 258 and 278 discs and something tells me they should be able to fit as well....

id imagine if you could make a new caliper carrier then you could use the 258mm calipers with 278 discs
youd be better off with 278 calipers though, part of the benefit in fiting bigger brakes is the bigger pad/disc contact area, which you wouldnt get with 258 calipers.

You need a whole 280mm set up on the Puma. Mixing and matching doesn't work i'm affraid.

If you have the standard 240mm setup try and soursce the 260mm standard setup for an easy and quick upgrade smile.gif

i wouldnt bother with the hastle of the conversion if you were keeping 258 calipers personally
plus, i dont know of anyone thats done it, im guessing youd need new caliper carriers and as far as i know there arent any that exist to mount 258 calipers onto 278 discs, however i may be wrong

try a few breakers yards, or part finders on the internet (google car spares or something)

on ebay, use the term ford calipers for the most relevent and broadest search, thats how I found mine, which were ending at an odd time which meant I got them on the cheap as I only put one max bid in which was enough to secure mine smile.gif

i just realised when you said std calipers you might have meant 240s and ive been talking about 260s, neways
as has been said, wouldnt bother trying and it cant be done unles new caliper carriers are made....

Some of the Ford callipers and carriers can be mixed and matched, but not what you're suggesting I'm afraid. For example ST150 brakes are 278mm, but the ST170 is 300mm. The only differences are bigger discs and carriers. Another example is Focus rear discs, the 253mm and ~280mm are again the same except for the discs and carriers.

Update (Sept 08): Puma gone after 5 years, now have VW 170 Tiguan TDI Sport and now have my weekends back rather than fixing the rust, HCV's, filling it up every 250 miles and worrying about the next timing belt change
