I know exactly where you are coming from Al

I had the same dilemma and ended up getting a Canon compact that was a relatively high spec model at the time I got it (just over 2 years ago iirc). It is exactly the sort of camera I want for snaps/record shots though it is not bad for more creative stuff, too. I have looked into getting a more up-to-date model recently but decided against it because the flashier, higher spec models are more bulky and will not slip into a pocket as easily/unobstrusively. They also have features that I would want to use my slr for - kinda defeats the object to get a compact and end up getting something that isn't just point-and-shoot if you already have the slr kit.

I swear by Canon (my slr kit is Canon as well), but I have no doubt that similar models made by Nikon etc will serve you just as well. Canon slr used CF cards but their compacts use SD cards.

A consideration is a case for your compact. I have one, but as it adds to the bulk considerably I do not always use it.

There are several Canons listed on Amazon at reasonable prices.

Good luck - do let us know what you get.

I use a Canon Ixus 55 & i think zip it has the Canon Ixus 65 - ideal for point & shoot that fits in your pocket.

lol - I have the Ixus 60 (and used it over lunchtime as I was out to lunch with my son and my parents!)

one thing I am really impressed with is the sharpness of the images

excellent thankyou chaps, been reading lots of reviews etc and the panasonic range seem to all get good reviews.

im thinking about this one that i can get for about £150

http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment...x-dmc-fx33.html

or the next model up with a 10.1 mp sensor is about £180

looks quite nice and gets scored high everywhere.

what do you think.

go and handle one - it is the only way you will see whether the handling and feel of it suit you

I would rather pay a bit more for a camera that I like the handling of than pay less for something with lots of features that I have difficulty accessing

the reviews certainly look promising smile.gif

FujiFilm Finepix F100FD
Independent review/group test

Don't judge a camera by megapixels! The last 2 cameras I bought were both FujiFilm and 'only' 6 megapixel ja_bebe.gif

No point having optical image stabilisers, 10x zoom and 12 megapixels when the images are smeary, noisy and lacking detail IMO. It's all down to sensor size, not megapixels.

I've had two Panasonics, once I got over the 'wow' features the images were distinctly noisy- OK for most people but not for me (I'm into low light shooting- not the place for noisy sensors, Lumix LX3 exempted).

Worth mentioning the prices of items like digital cameras have actually risen over the past year due to currency fluctuation...

It's why my Panasonic DMC-TZ5 sold on eBay for more than I bought it for 10 months ago huh.gif

You want one with good high ISO performance, i.e. low noise at high ISOs. It's a tough call for small sensor cameras
It means nothing that a camera can 'do' ISO 400 if the photos are washed out and grainy as hell.

It's tough to find compact cameras £150-200 that can do this these days as they've all gone megapixel mad=MORE noise at high ISOs.

There is the Fuji Finepix F100fd I mentioned earlier within your budget.

Canon Ixus 70, an absolutly outstanding camera, takes very good photos and its tiny, with metal body so feels good, turns on in about a second and is really good when your out at night, very fast and sharp.
