Hi there

Im new to the forum. I have recently purchased my first puma for a grand total of £206 with a short MOT. I put it in for the MOT and it passed first time which is great! So far I really like they way the car drives and handles and im planning to do a few track days in it.

I have been reading some posts on here about upgrading the brakes. As mine is one the of the older cars it has the 240mm discs so I purchased some fiesta ST brakes off ebay. Due to a mistake in the description and a misunderstanding on my part I have ended up with mk7 fiesta ST calipers and carriers rather than mk6 ones. I see they are 280mm and 4 stud like the mk6 but does anyone know whether or not these will fit the puma, and if so what work/modifications will be required to make them fit?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Will

The wiki has a brake guide and what other Ford models fit the Puma.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

That's great thanks for your help.

In the end we took the wheel off to have a quick look to see if they mk7 fiesta st brakes would fit. Unfortunately they wouldn't as the hole spacing on the carriers was different to the car. I have now ordered some mk6 discs and callipers which should get here in the next few days.

My car has the old style fan alloys, does anyone know whether these have enough clearance between the st150 callipers and the Wheel? I've had a bit of a look around online but there seems to be mixed opinions, I guess either way some spaces would solve the problem?

Thanks

Will

From the wiki
Fiesta ST (2002 - 2008) (280mm)
This car uses a 280mm disc with a single piston calliper, this is a direct bolt on conversion, no spacing necessary, and no enlarging of bolt holes. Unfortunately because of the relative scarcity and newness of the Fiesta ST, this conversion can be expensive. Should fit behind standard 15" wheels.

You need 3 mm spacer behind propellor puma wheels. Thunder and 9 spokes need no spacers. Same thing about F1 wheels. They also need no spacers. Speaking fromm experience; I have ST150 brakes and use 3 mm spacer with propellor wheels and winter tyres. with summer tyres I use thunder wheels and they need no spacers.

I have just fitted Fiesta ST150 brakes behind propeller alloys. The result was frightening when I first looked at them. I didn't use any spacers, but they do fit... just. When I first drove around the car park, as I moved off, there was what sounded like a horrific noise, so I slammed my foot to the floor, anticipating that the brakes had rubbed against the alloys. They hadn't, and I stopped more quickly than ever before! I then edged further and there was no repeat of this noise, so I assume that one of the springs (the most irritating things EVER!) had rubbed itself into place from the alloy. I drove for 50 miles that day, close to home, to check that all was well, and indeed it was! After these 50 miles, an almighty rattling developed. I had no idea what it was, and luckily, it turned out not to be anything steering or suspension (I had worried about this because of the amount of hammering and other force it took to get the old rusted and rounded bolts off the car), but just that a couple of the bolts weren't as tight as they could've been. It has now been 150 miles, and all is well. I am not considering any spacers, because although the Caliper is close, it is acceptable in my opinion, though I do see the case for a small amount of wheel spacing.

Hope you have fun, just be careful the first time you brake! I almost catapulted my poor passenger through the windscreen - good job my seatbelts work well!! It is the only modification I had considered, and I think that it's the only one that the Puma actually needs (barring some slightly brighter headlights).
