My friend has just one tickets to this:-

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF COWES WEEK…

Skandia Cowes Week is the world’s premier sailing regatta, with over 1,000 yachts and 8,000 competitors taking part in some top-class sailing. This eight-day event has a rich heritage having run since 1826 and attracts a wide range of competitors from true amateurs to Olympic and World champions.

It has a huge amount to offer both sailors and visitors alike, with an exciting racing schedule afloat and a packed entertainment itinerary on shore throughout the week. A visit to Cowes during the regatta is a must, with its great selection of specialist shops, excellent line-up of live bands and superb choice of cuisine, all helping to create a festival atmosphere - plus one of the best sailing spectacles in the entire world!

WELCOME TO ARTEMIS OCEAN RACING 1 OPEN 60…

Open 60s (60 foot in length) are one of the fastest boats in sailing. Built from carbon fibre using the latest hi-tech structures, they are designed to be as light as possible (for speed) but strong enough to withstand the worst the seas can throw at them.

They are designed from the outset to be sailed by one person. There are very few comforts aboard, and the skipper will spend most of the time in the 'crash' seats in a cuddy that separates the open cockpit and deck from the Navigation work station. This is the nerve system, packed with electronics and computer equipment to help navigate, check performance, and communicate.

The boat has a number of different sails to suit various conditions; not as many sails as a boat designed to be sailed by a 12 strong crew, but enough to keep the solo skipper working hard all the time matching sailplan to wind and sea conditions. There are three types of sails; a mainsail, headsails on furlers (rolled up around the stays) and a spinnaker, although alone, the spinnaker is only used in very stable conditions (to be caught in a squall with this huge balloon of sail could mean disaster; end of race!).

The boats also have to prove their ability to turn themselves the right way up if they become knocked down or turn upside down. This is part of the latest IMOCA safety rules which require the boat to right without the assistance of waves by the skipper taking some action to turn the boat over.

Previously sailed as Pindar AlphaGraphics, the Artemis boat is widely recognised as one of the fastest yachts on the circuit. Designed by Owen Clarke and Rob Humphries, it was originally built as Hexagon, for Graham Dalton’s 2002 Around Alone campaign. Under Pindar’s onwnership from 2003 to 2006, it was finely tuned under the direction of Mike Sanderson and Emma Richards for entry into a number of high profile events, including the Transat Jacques Vabre 2003 and 2007, the Transat 2004, the Rolex Fastnet 2005, The Route du Rhum 2006.

For more information please visit www.artemisoceanracing.com.

YOUR ITINERARY FOR THE DAY

(* Please refer to the map below for exact locations)

10am – Meeting in ‘Sail for Gold Bar’ tent for tea and coffee

11am – Guests board AOR – RIB transfers from Trinity Landing

14pm – Lunch/Snacks onboard Artemis Ocean Racing (AOR)

4pm – AOR back on mooring
Rib transfers to Trinity Landing
Post sailing drinks ashore in ‘Sail for Gold Bar’

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING

Please ensure you wear comfortable clothing for your Artemis Investment Racing Experience. We are sure the sun will once again shine on Cowes and we suggest you bring the following:

• Sunhat
• Sun lotion
• Sun Block
• Shorts and T-shirts
• White-soled Deck shoes or trainers
• Sun-glasses

Nevertheless we would like to advise that even if the weather is hot on the land the temperature is always lower on the water, so in addition you may wish to bring the following:

• Sweaters / Fleeces (layers are best)
• Trousers
• Hat, Gloves, scarf and thick socks
• We do not recommend jeans as they take a long time to dry. It is much warmer to wear multiple thin layers than one thick layer.
• Please pack in a soft holdall as there is limited storage space on board the yacht. Please note that for security reasons and limited storage we are unable to store any personal items.
• Sea-sickness tablets. If you are known to suffer from sea-sickness, please consider purchasing some appropriate medication from your local pharmacy and begin taking them as instructed 24 hours before you board the yacht. Please note; always consult your doctor before taking any medication

Life-jackets and wet weather gear will be provided.

he has invited me and of coarse i have said yes ( fot me it's a once in a life time thing) but having never been intested in sailing i have no idea what to expect so any one have any tips also i want to take some pictures of the day but there is no way i am risking my new camera so any one have any ideas on that?

do you know if you will be actually sailing (taking part in the sails etc.) or just enjoying the experience of sailing?
what ever the day it is an experience
you don't know unless you try it biggrin.gif
go for it biggrin.gif

the worst is you may get wet and throw up, neither are that bad wink.gif

just watch out/listen out so you don;t get hit by the boom wink.gif

generally once in a life time things have to be undertaken, and generally you will really enjoy yourself!

can you not do a search on previous years events, im sure you'll find some pics giving you a better idea of what to expect.

Never ASSUME. It makes an ASS out of U and ME.

Whats 14pm?

wink.gif

You git, you out and out swine!!!

Take a sense of humour, and leave behind your self conscience. The sailing world ( esp in the UK ) is all about what you wear, and where you bought it from. Dont get sucked in, Cowes is bloody expensive, as are the bars. That said, its a superb place for people watching, and a days sail on that beastie is as close to heaven as you can get on water.

Swine,

just in case you missed that,

SWINE!!!

plus use a strong sun scream, you will burn mega quick when out on the water
polarising sun glasses are best if you had a choice with what you had smile.gif

Not going to gaurantee this, but from experience, most people only get sea sick if the engines are running. Go with the swell if it gets rough, and if you are really ill, get as close to the centre of the deck as you can.

personally more likely to be sick on the ferry, when sailing it will be too much fun to think of throwing up wink.gif

the only thing that might be a pain is making sure you have white soled shoes

If you get chance, go up the Hill in Cowes, to Bekens. One of the oldest surviving specialist in naughtical photography in the world. Worth going in if just to look at some of the best sailing photos there are, most over 70 years old smile.gif

If you are worried about it, you will be. Go to your chemist, and ask for advice on what you should have. sea sick tablets take time to kick in, so ideally you take them before you set foot into the tender.
